EDUCATION MEETINGS.

NOTICE is hereby given, that the Annual Statutory Meeting of the Owners and Occupiers of Land and Householders in each Educational District, for the Election of a new School Committee, and for the other purposes specified by Ordinance, will be held upon Monday, the 13th day of January, 1873, at seven o’clock p.m., at the following mentioned places respectively, viz. :—

At Dunedin, in the Middle District School-house, between York place and Dowling street.

At Tokomairiro, in the Main District School-house, Milton.

And in the respective School-houses, or buildings used as School-houses, in the following mentioned districts, viz. :— Port Chalmers, Portobello, North East Harbour, Anderson’s Bay, North East Valley, Wakari, Kaikorai, Mornington, Caversham, Green Island, East Taieri, Saddle Hill, North Taieri, Lake Waihola, Balclutha, Warepa, Kaitangata, Blueskin, Waikouaiti, Hampden, Otepopo, Oamaru, Lawrence, Queenstown, Waihola Gorge, West Taieri, Maungatapu, Clyde, Alexandra, Naseby (Mount Ida), Palmerston, Waitahuna, Port Molyneux, Pleasant River, Arrowtown, Cromwell, East Clutha, Waitepeka, Inch Clutha, Kaitangata, Switzers, Tuapeka West, Waiwera, Invercargill, Long Bush, Wallace Town, Campbell Town, Woodlands, Waiwera, Flint’s Bush, Myross Bush, Winton, Gummie’s Bush, One Tree Point, Riverton, and Waikivi.

The householders, in the following mentioned localities respectively, in which Side Schools have been established or authorised, are advised to meet in the School-houses or buildings used as School-houses, of their respective districts on the aforesaid Monday, the 13th day of January, 1873, at 7 o’clock p.m., for the purpose of electing School Committees for the ensuing year, viz. :— Moa Flat, Hamilton, Sowburn, St. Bathans, Blue Spur, Wetherstones, Otokia, Popotunoa, Taieri Beach, Awamoka, Macraes, Hillend, Tapuini, Upper Harbour West, Lower Harbour, Whare Flat, Black’s, Te Houka, Waiwera, Herton, Waireka (Cave Valley), Mimihau (Mataura), Hyde, Wangaloa, Lower Shotover, Moeraki, Macetown, Glenore, South Akatore, South Bridge, Cardrona, Kakanui, Sawyer’s Bay, Highcliff, Tuapeka Mouth, Thompson’s, (Drybread and Tinkers), Tuturau, Taieri Ferry, Greytown, Tuapeka, Albertown (Wanaka), Sandymount, Mount Cargill, Nokomai, Papakaio, Pukeuri, Kuri Bush, Adam’s Flat, Shag Valley, Clarke’s Flat, Upper Kyeburn, Lower Kyeburn, Inch Valley, Purakanui, Mosgiel, Evan’s Flat, Dunkeld (Beaumont), Walton, Brinn’s Point, Manuka Creek, Forest Hill, Mabel Bush, Grove Bush, Groper’s Bush, Limestone Plains, Orepuki, Oreti, and Wild Bush.

Extract from Section XIV. of the Education Ordinance, 1864.

On the second Monday in the month of January in each year, a public meeting of the owners and occupiers of land and householders in every Educational District, being male persons above twenty-one years of age, shall be held at a time and place to be fixed by the Secretary of the Board, and notified by public advertisement at least one month previously, and in such other manner as the Board shall direct, and at such meeting a Chairman shall be chosen and the School Committee for the preceding year shall give a full report of their proceedings, and thereupon the electors present shall proceed to elect, either by show of hands or by ballot, as shall be determined upon by the said meeting, a new School Committee for the ensuing year of not less than five nor more than nine persons possessing the qualifications prescribed by clause 13, and may re-elect all or any of the persons going out of office to be members of such new Committee, and every Committee so to be appointed shall hold office until the appointment of their successors.

Educational Prizes.

THE DIRECTORS have resolved to offer the following Prizes, to be competed for by Children attending any of the Elementary Schools in the Province, viz. :—

A first prize of £2; a second prize of £1; a third prize of 15s; and fourth prize of 10s; — for excellence in each of the following subjects, viz. :—

1. Scottish History, from the Accession of Alexander III. to the Battle of Flodden. Text books—the ordinary School Histories, and “Tales of a Grandfather.”

2. Recitation—English or Scotch (not less than 16 lines).

3. Arithmetic as far as Fractions. Text-books, the usual School Arithmetics.

4. English Grammar—Analysis of a piece to be selected by the Judges.

Extra Prize—A Gold Medal, presented by K. Ramsay, Esq., President of the Society, for General Excellence in the competition.

A handsome copy of one of the Scottish Poets, presented by T. Callender, Esq., for the best recitation of the “Wee, Wee German Lairdie.” Competition for this prize is open to all Schools.

Competitors are requested to send in their names to the Secretary on or before Thursday, 26th December next.

The examination will be held in Dunedin, on Saturday, 28th December next, at 11 a.m., at a place to be named in a future advertisement.

EDUCATION RESERVES, SOUTHLAND.

APPLICATIONS will be received by Mr. John H. Baker, Survey Office, Invercargill, from persons wishing to lease any of the Reserves as formerly advertised.
