Now therefore I, James Macandrew, Superintendent of the Province of Otago, do hereby appoint the several days hereinafter specified, at twelve o’clock noon, for the First Election of Members of the District Board for the several districts and subdivisions hereinafter mentioned respectively, to be elected under and by virtue of the said recited Ordinances.

NOTICE.
I, Charles Smith, Returning Officer for the Districts above-named, do hereby, in terms of the 98th section of “The Otago Roads Ordinance, 1871,” “require all candidates to be nominated in manner” as is by the said Ordinance provided, and at such times and places as are above set forth. And I do hereby give notice that in the event of a Poll being demanded, notice of the day on which such Poll shall be held will be given in each case immediately upon such demand being made.

The following extracts from the “Otago Roads Ordinance 1871” respecting nominations of candidates are published for general information :-
“Section 98. * every candidate shall be proposed by an elector duly qualified to vote at the election and seconded by another elector so qualified and if there be no more candidates proposed and seconded than the number of members then to be elected the returning officer shall declare such candidates to be duly elected.
“Section 99. In the event of there being more candidates proposed and seconded than the number to be elected the returning officer shall call for a show of hands separately in favor of each candidate and after such show shall declare the persons in whose favor the show of hands shall appear to have been and if thereupon a poll be not demanded by one of the candidates or by not less than two electors the returning officer shall declare such persons to be duly elected.”
BONUS FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A WOOL-PACK AND SACK MANUFACTORY IN OTAGO.
THE Provincial Government being desirous of encouraging the manufacture of Wool-packs and Sacks, is prepared to receive offers from parties willing to embark in the enterprise, and is further prepared to pay a bonus of £1000 as under:—
On the erection of buildings and machinery to the value of at least £2000—£500.
On the production of Sacks or Wool packs to a value of not less than £500—£250.
On the production of a further quantity of Sacks or Wool-packs to the value of not less than £1000—£250.
The cloth in each case to be produced by machinery permanently established in the Province, and to be manufactured either wholly or to a large extent from Phormium Tenax, or other indigenous plants, or from other material grown in the Province.
Offers will be received at the Provincial Government Offices, Dunedin, until the 10th of October, 1872, and should state the estimated cost and productive power of the machinery proposed to be erected, the date on which the same will be in operation, and that the parties are prepared to be bound in the sum of £1000 to produce sacks and woolpacks to the value of £1500 within three years from the date on which their offer is accepted.
The Government does not bind itself to accept any offer.
BONUS FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A GLASS BOTTLE MANUFACTORY.
THE Provincial Government being desirous of encouraging the manufacture of Glass Bottles in Otago, is prepared to receive offers from parties willing to embark in the enterprise, and is further prepared to pay a bonus of £300, as under:—
On the erection of building and plant, of a value of not less than £500—£100.
On production of 100 gross of bottles—£100.
On production of a further quantity of 200 gross—£100.
Offers will be received at the Provincial Government Offices, Dunedin, and should state the estimated cost of the works proposed to be erected, the date on which the same will be in operation, and that the parties are prepared to be bound in the sum of £250 to produce 500 gross of Bottles within two years from the date on which the tender is accepted.
The Government does not bind itself to accept any offer.
BONUS FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A PAPER MANUFACTORY.
THE Provincial Government being desirous of promoting the introduction and establishment of a Paper Manufactory in Otago, is prepared to receive offers from parties willing to embark in the enterprise; and is further prepared to pay a bonus of £1500 as under—such bonus to be in addition to a bonus of £2,500 offered by the General Government for the first 100 tons of printing paper produced.
