Sheep Returns Otago

RETURN OF NUMBER OF SHEEP IN THE PROVINCE OF OTAGO :-

Sheep Inspector’s Department,
Dunedin, 11th April, 1872.

The Provincial Treasurer,
Dunedin.

SIR,—I have the honor to forward for the information of the Government, Return of Sheep in the Province of Otago, for the year ended 30th September, 1871.

The accompanying list shows a total of two millions four hundred and thirty-one thousand six hundred and twenty-three (2,431,623) sheep above six months old, of which number one million seven hundred and seventy-seven thousand seven hundred and eighty-two (1,777,782) are returned as depasturing on runs; four hundred and ninety-two thousand and eighty-eight (492,088) on freehold; one hundred and thirty-six thousand and fifty-four (136,054) on Gold Fields; and twenty-five thousand six hundred and ninety-nine (25,699) on Hundreds.

I have thought it advisable in this instance to give a separate list, herewith enclosed, for the Southland district of the Province, but will in future include the whole of the sheep in one return. The number in Southland is six hundred and seventy-nine thousand eight hundred and sixteen (679,816), of which number four hundred and twenty-eight thousand one hundred and twenty (428,120) are returned as depasturing on runs; two hundred and fifty thousand seven hundred and forty-six (250,746) on freehold; and nine hundred and fifty (950) on Hundreds. Making a total for the whole Province of three millions one hundred and eleven thousand four hundred and thirty-nine (3,111,439).

A reference to the accompanying lists will show that all the sheep in the Province are returned free from scab, and if care is taken in admitting fresh lots into the country they are likely to remain so. I may mention that I have purposely refrained from publishing the annual report earlier until I had by personal inspection satisfied myself that the disease was quite eradicated, and I think I may safely say that such is the case, as there has been no sign of scab for the last twelve months.

I have the honor to be, Sir,

Your most obedient servant,

WM. LOGIE, Chief Inspector.
