NEW ZEALAND GEOLOGICAL SURVEY.—LABORATORY.—CLASS, COAL.

Results of Analysis of Specimens No. 1145 and 1146, forwarded by His Honor the Superintendent of Otago, Locality, Otago. Received 13th December, 1871; Reported on 15th December, 1871.

Brown Coals.

No. 1145, from Kaitangata.—A solid, compact coal, laminated, homogeneous; lustre generally bright, color black; color of powder black brown. Is evidently much water-logged, and will, consequently, lose a large portion of water on being exposed to the air for a length of time.

No. 1146, from Saddle Hill.—Has much the same appearance as the sample of coal obtained from this locality some years ago. Though it bears evident signs (those of fissures) of having been considerably desiccated, it contains a large quantity of water, as seen by the analysis below:—

No. 1145. No. 1146.
Water 20.91 21.01
Fixed Carbon 36.57 39.28
Hydro Carbon 35.20 34.06
Ash 7.32 5.65
100.00 100.00

Both good brown coals.

J. Hector.

FLAX.—The following letter is published for general information. The samples therein referred to may be had by parties interested as stated in the said letter, on application at the Superintendent’s Office, Dunedin:—
