THE DIRECTORS of the CALEDONIAN SOCIETY of OTAGO have agreed to offer the following Prizes at the forthcoming Annual Gathering, on the 1st and 2nd January, 1872.
For an Essay on the "Writings of Sir W. Scott and their influence on the present age"—1st prize £5, 2nd prize £2 10s.
For Children who have attended any Elementary School in the Province during the current year. Three prizes in each of the following subjects, of £1 10s, £1, and 10s:—
I. British History, from the Accession of George I till the Outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789, Text Books, British Empire, S. S. B. A., Collier’s British History, and Tales of a Grandfather.
II. Analysis of a portion of "Gloomy Winter’s noo awa."
III. Recitation from a Scottish author (in the Scottish dialect).
IV. Recitation from an English author. (Recitations to be not less than twenty lines.)
V. A prize of £1 10s for general excellence in all the above subjects.
The Essays to be sent in to the undersigned not later than the 28th December, 1871.

ABSTRACT FROM PREVIOUS GAZETTES of Impounding Notices:—
29th December, Friday, noon, a horse will be sold at West Taieri Pound.
29th December, Friday, noon, a bullock and a cow will be sold at Palmerston Pound.
29th December, Friday, noon, two horses will be sold at Tokomairiro Pound.
FUNERALS ordered by Police Department in Port Chalmers.
Tenders will be received at the Government Offices, Dunedin, until noon of Friday, 5th January, 1872, from persons willing to provide all the funerals which may be ordered by the above department from the date of accepting the tender until the 31st December, 1872. Schedules for tender may be obtained from the Police Department, Port Chalmers.
SIGNAL HILL Road Board invite tenders for repairs to main district road.
Contractors who meet at Grand View, on Saturday, between 12 and 2 o’clock p.m., will be shown the work. Specifications to be seen, and tenders to be lodged with the undersigned up till 4 o’clock p.m. on Wednesday, the 3rd January, 1872.—Hugh Bowen, Clerk to the Board, 23rd Dec., 1871.
ROSLYN Road Board.
Wanted Tenders for the formation of Waverly street, Melrose. Plans and specifications to be seen at the dwelling of A. H. Ross, Esq., Roslyn. Tenders, accompanied by 10 per cent. cash deposit, to be delivered on or before Thursday, the 4th January, 1872. The lowest or any tender not necessarily accepted.—H. P. Macklin, Clerk.
NORTH EAST VALLEY Local Road Board.
Tenders are invited for Contracts Nos. 1 and 2. Specifications, &c., may be seen at my house North East Valley, and tenders received up to the 5th January, 1872. The above Board do not bind themselves to accept the lowest or any tender.—Henry Duncan, Clerk to Board.
SANDYMOUNT Road District.—Tenders are invited for clearing bush, and formation and metal on several Road lines. The inspectors will meet the contractors at the Lime Kilns, at 12 o’clock on the 10th January, 1872, to show works and specifications, and receive tenders up till four o’clock, p.m. The lowest or any tender not necessarily accepted.—Geo. WASTE LAND BOARD ADVERTISEMENTS.
SETTLERS are reminded that by the “Regulations for the Management of Pasturage within Hundreds” every person depasturing or desirous of depasturing cattle on the unfenced waste lands within any Hundred, is required, on or before the 1st of January in every year to furnish to the Waste Land Board a return, showing the number of acres of land owned or occupied by him, the number of acres owned or occupied (if any) unenclosed available to be depastured on by all licensed stock, and the number, description, and brands of all cattle intended to be depastured upon a Hundred.
Penalty for not making a return, or for making a false one, £20.

NOTICE is hereby given that Sections 2, Block III; and 2, Block VII, Waipahi District; and Sections 10, Block XI; 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, Block VIII; 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, Block V; 1 and 3, Block VIII, Clutha District, will be offered for sale by public auction, by Mr R. W. Capstick, at the Crown Hotel, Balclutha, on Tuesday, the 23rd day of January next, at noon, at the upset price of 10s per acre.

NOTICE to APPLICANTS for UNSURVEYED LAND under “Otago Waste Lands Act 1866.”
It is hereby notified to the applicants whose names appear in the subjoined Schedule, that the Waste Land Board has declared them to be the purchasers of the sections set opposite their names in the Schedule, and that the purchase money of these sections must be paid to the Receiver of Land Revenue, in Invercargill, on or before Wednesday, the 10th day of January, 1872, otherwise the applications will be deemed withdrawn, cancelled, and void, and the deposit made at the time of lodging the application will be forfeited.
