Immigration Notices

Provincial Secretary's Office,

Dunedin, 31st January, 1871.

THE following communication having been received from the General Government on the subject of the introduction into the Colony of some Norwegian and Swedish emigrants, is published for general information:

Although the Provincial Government recognises the present Provincial system of immigration to be sufficient and the best adapted to meet the requirements of the Province, yet it will gladly forward to Wellington any applications that may be received for the said emigrants, and will give every assistance to encourage their settlement in the Colony.

John L. Gillies,
Pro Provincial Secretary.

Colonial Secretary's Office,

Wellington, 24th January, 1871.

Sir,

I have the honor to enclose a New Zealand Gazette, No. 66, of the 19th November last, containing a memorandum from the New Zealand Commissioners, stating certain steps which they had taken for the introduction into this Colony of some Norwegian and Swedish emigrants.

The “Celano,” I have since learned, left the English Channel at the commencement of November last for Wellington, with emigrants on board, a descriptive list of whom I enclose for your Honor’s information.

I shall feel obliged if you would inform me whether the Provincial Government of Otago would wish to have any of these emigrants sent to that Province; and, if so, I have to request you to be good enough to specify their number and description.

I have the honor to be, Sir,
Your most obedient servant,
W. Gisborne,
Under Secretary of Otago.

PRIVATE PETITIONS

The following resolution by the Private Petitions Committee, which was afterwards adopted by the Provincial Council, is published for general information:

"In concluding their labours, your Committee would recommend to the consideration of the Council the advisability of laying down as a rule of this House, that all Petitions should be first submitted to the Government, if possible, during the recess, before being presented to the Provincial Council; so that the Government may be prepared beforehand with any evidence they wish to procure bearing on the prayer of the Petitions; and all applications for Reserves should be made to the Government during the recess, and brought down to the Council with their opinion thereon."

John L. Gillies, Chairman.
Dunedin, December 5, 1870.

IMMIGRATION TO OTAGO.

Conditions — £6

For each adult, and the half of that sum for persons between the ages of 1 and 12, must be paid in Otago before the names are sent home to the Agent in Edinburgh.

If the parties remain three years in Otago, no further payment will require to be made. If they do not remain that time, another payment of £8 10s. must be made before leaving Otago.

All Immigrants must be approved by the Agents for the Province, and may sail either from London or Glasgow.

Schedule, &c., may be had on application.—John Logan, Immigration Agent. Dunedin, 11th October, 1870.

IMMIGRANTS' PASSAGE MONEY

All Immigrants in arrears requested to pay the same forthwith, otherwise expenses will be incurred. Lists containing the names of all persons in arrears have been placed in the hands of the police.—John Logan, Immigration Agent. Dunedin, 11th October, 1870.

FLAX

The House of Representatives having resolved that there should be an Exhibition in Wellington, during the next Session of the Assembly, of all varieties of Flax fibre prepared in the Colony, manufacturers are invited to forward to the Flax Commissioners, through the Superintendent of their Province, samples of the fibre, rope, sacking, or any other material, prepared by them from the New Zealand Flax.

The samples of fibre should not be less than 20 lbs. in weight, and 10 or 15 fathoms of each kind of rope will be sufficient. It is desirable that a statement of the processes, and estimated cost of manufacture, should accompany the samples.

James Hector,
Chairman of Flax Commission.
