  • For geographical reasons, the Intercolonial Steamers, on arriving at or leaving New Zealand, do not make Dunedin their first port of arrival, or their last port of departure. This accounts for the very large disproportion between the Shipping Returns for Otago and those for New Zealand — other Ports, such as the Bluff and Hokitika being credited with Shipping, though a very large proportion of the cargo is in fact shipped to or from Dunedin.
