PROCLAMATION
Appointing certain Districts under "The Registration Act, 1858."
WHEREAS by "The Registration Act, 1858" it is enacted that it shall be lawful for the Governor at any time, by Proclamation in the New Zealand Gazette, to divide the Colony of New Zealand for the purposes of the said Act into such and so many districts as he may think fit, and that every such district shall be called by a distinct name, and shall be a Registrar’s district; and it is provided that the Governor may at any time revoke the whole or any part of such Proclamation, and issue a new Proclamation dividing the Colony or any part of it anew into districts or increasing the number or altering the boundaries of districts as from time to time he may think requisite.
And whereas, by Proclamations duly made and issued, the Governor, in pursuance of the said recited power and authority, did amongst others constitute districts in the Province of Otago for the purposes of the said Act, the boundaries whereof were therein set forth.
And whereas it is expedient to revoke so much of the said Proclamations as relates to the said districts, and to proclaim and declare that the territory formerly comprised within such districts shall be and is hereby divided for the purposes of the said Act into districts, the names and boundaries whereof shall be as follows:—
DUNEDIN DISTRICT,
comprises all that area bounded on the north by the Waimeho Creek, Blueskin Bay, and the ocean; on the east and south by Port Chalmers District and by the ocean; and on the west by Kaikorai and Abbott’s Creek’s; thence by the watershed of the Kaikorai Flagstaff and Swampy Hill Ranges to the source of the Waimeho Creek.
PORT CHALMERS DISTRICT,
All that area comprising the Town of Port Chalmers, the Lower Harbour, West Survey District, the Sawyers Bay Survey District, sections numbered 88 to 115 inclusive, North-east Valley Survey District, and blocks IV, V, VI, and part of VII North Harbour and Blueskin Survey District—bounded from the north-west corner of block IV, North Harbour and Blueskin Survey District, in a southerly direction, by the western boundary line of the said block IV to the northern boundary line of block VI, North Harbour and Blueskin Survey District; thence by the said northern boundary line of the said block VI, and the northern boundary line of block VII, North Harbour and Blueskin Survey District; thence by the said northern boundary line of block VIII to the Main North Road; thence by the Main North Road to the northern boundary line of the North-east Valley Survey District; thence in a westerly direction by the said northern boundary line of the North-east Valley District to a road line between sections 87 and 89 of the said district; thence by the said road line continued between sections 86 and 88, North-east Valley District to the northern boundary line of block IX, North Harbour and Blueskin Survey Districts; thence in an easterly direction by the said northern boundary line of the said block IX to the north-west corner of section 33, Sawyers Bay Survey District; thence in a south-easterly direction by the boundary line of the said Sawyers Bay Survey District to Otago Harbour; and thence by high-water mark to the starting point.
TOKOMAIRIRO DISTRICT,
comprises all that area bounded from the Clutha River to the northern boundary of the North Tokomairiro and West Taieri Hundreds to the Waipori River; thence by the Waipori River and Lake and the Taieri River to the ocean; thence by the ocean to the Wangaloa Creek; thence by the North Molyneux Registration District to the Clutha River; and by the Clutha River to the starting point.
WANAKA DISTRICT,
comprises all that area bounded towards the north by the Province of Canterbury; towards the east by the Oamaru District; towards the south by the Blackstone and Dunstan Registration Districts; and towards the west by the Arrow and Wakatipu Registration Districts.
CLUTHA DISTRICT,
comprises all that area bounded towards the north by Deucher Burn; thence to Stoney Creek; thence by Stoney Creek to the Tuakitoto Lake; thence towards the east by the eastern shore of the Tuakitoto Lake to Two Stone Creek; thence by Two Stone Creek to the leading ridge direct to Wangaloa Creek; thence by Wangaloa Creek to the ocean; thence towards the south by the ocean to the Clutha River; and thence towards the west by the Clutha River and its Koau branch to the junction of Deucher Burn, the starting point.
NORTH MOLYNEUX DISTRICT,
comprises all that area bounded towards the north by the Dunedin District; thence to Senny Creek; thence by Senny Creek to the Tuakitoto Lake; thence towards the east by the eastern shore of the Tuakitoto Lake to Two Stone Creek; thence by Two Stone Creek to the leading ridge direct to Wangaloa Creek; thence by Wangaloa Creek to the ocean; thence towards the south by the ocean to the Clutha River; thence towards the west by the Clutha River to its junction with Deucher Burn, the starting point.
Now therefore, I, Sir George Grey, the Governor of the said Colony, in pursuance and exercise of the power and authority vested in me by the said recited Act, do hereby revoke the said Proclamations so far as relates to the said districts, and do proclaim and declare that the territory formerly comprised within such districts shall be and is hereby divided for the purposes of the said Act into districts, the names and boundaries whereof shall be as follows:—
WAITEMATA DISTRICT,
comprises all that area bounded on the north by the Waimeho Creek, Blueskin Bay, and the ocean; on the east by the ocean; on the south by the Port Chalmers District; and on the west by the watershed of the Kaikorai Flat and Swampy Hill Ranges.
ARROW DISTRICT,
comprises all that area bounded towards the north and east by the Wanaka District, and by the Dunstan Districts; towards the south by the Kawarau River; and on the west by the watershed of the Shotover and Arrow Rivers.
OAMARU DISTRICT,
comprises all that area bounded on the north by the Province of Canterbury; on the east by the ocean; on the south by the Horse Range, Kakanui Hawkesbury Ranges; and on the west by Mount St. Bathans, and the continuation of the Dunstan Mountains to the Province of Canterbury.
EAST TAERI DISTRICT,
comprises all that area bounded on the north by Waikouaiti District; on the east by Dunedin District; on the south by the ocean; and on the west by the Taieri River.
WAIKOUAITI DISTRICT,
comprises all that area bounded towards the east from Shag Point by the ocean to the Dunedin Registration District; thence towards the south by the Dunedin Registration District to Silver Peak Hills; by Silver Peak Hills to a point due east of Allen’s Creek; thence to Allen’s Creek and by the said Creek to the Taieri River; thence towards the west by the Taieri River to Fillyburn; thence towards the north by a line due east to the Oamaru Registration District; and thence by the said District to the starting point.
WAKATIPU DISTRICT,
comprises all that area bounded towards the north by the Province of Canterbury; towards the east by the Wanaka District.
And I do declare that this Proclamation shall come into operation and take effect on the first day of February, one thousand eight hundred and sixty-six.
Given under the hand of His Excellency Sir George Grey, Knight Commander of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Governor and Commander-in-Chief in and over Her Majesty’s Colony of New Zealand and its Dependencies, at the Government House at Wellington, and issued under the Seal of the said Colony, this thirtieth day of November, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-five.
