APPOINTMENTS TO BE MADE.—An Assistant
Engineer for the Railway Engineer’s Department. Salary at the rate of £400 per annum.
A Draughtsman and Clerk for the Railway Engineer’s Department. Salary at the rate of £250 per annum.
All applications for the above appointments to be in writing, accompanied with testimonials, and to be lodged with the Secretary for Public Works on or before Monday, the 5th December.
A Paymaster for the Northern Districts. Apply by writing, accompanied by testimonials, to the office of Roads and Works, on or before Friday, the 25th inst.

NOTICE.—Lease of the WAIHOLA GORGE AND CLUTHA AND TUAPEKA ROADS JUNCTION TOLL-GATES.—Notice is hereby given that in pursuance of the provisions of the “Turnpikes Ordinance, 1862” and the “Turnpikes Ordinance Amendment Ordinance, 1864,” the Tolls authorised to be taken at the Toll-Gates on the Main South Road, in the Province of Otago, known as the Waihola Gorge Toll-Gate, and the Clutha and Tuapeka Roads Junction Toll-Gate, will be let by public auction, at 12 o’clock noon, on Friday, the 23rd day of December proximo, at the Public Works Office, Dunedin, for ten months, from Sunday, the first day of January, 1865. The party or parties to whom the Tolls shall be so let to find two sufficient sureties for the payment of the rent monthly, and forthwith to enter into a proper agreement for the taking of the said Tolls, and paying the rent at the time stipulated.
And in accordance with the requirements of the said “Turnpikes Ordinance, 1862,” the following return of the Tolls collected at the respective gates, less the cost of collection, is published for general information:
