REGULATIONS
Under “Watermen’s Licensing Ordinance,
1863,” for the Lake Wakatipu.
-
No person licensed under the
“Watermen’s Licensing Ordinance,
1863,” shall use any rowing or sailing
boat on the Lake Wakatipu, for the
carriage or conveyance of passengers or
goods, unless such boat has been first ap-
proved of in writing by the person
authorised to grant licenses in the
Wakatipu District; and if any such
licensed person shall be found using, or
shall be employed as hired servant, in
any such boat, for such purpose, he shall
be liable to a penalty of Forty Shillings,
and his license may be forfeited in the
discretion of the person before whom the
penalty shall be recovered. -
The person authorised to grant
licenses in the Wakatipu District may,
if he think fit, withdraw his written ap-
proval of any such boat if he shall at any
time afterwards, upon examination, find
the boat is not in good condition, and in
every way fit and safe for the carriage of
passengers and goods. -
The person authorised to grant li-
censes in the Wakatipu District, shall keep
a register of all rowing and sailing boats,
approved of by him and shall in such
register and in such written approval
enter the tonnage of such sailing vessels. -
All boats to be employed in carrying
goods or passengers to any distance beyond
half a mile from the shore of the Lake,
or from any landing place on the Lake,
shall be decked, and of not less than five
tons according to the register kept by such
authorised person as aforesaid, and if any
person shall carry for hire cargo or pas-
sengers in a boat not decked, or of less
tonnage than five tons, to a greater distance
than half a mile from the shore, or from
any such landing place, such person shall
be liable to a penalty of Forty Shillings. -
All boats carrying goods or pas-
sengers on the said Lake, to be allowed to
carry three passengers for every ton, when
such space is not occupied with cargo, the
tonnage of every vessel to be deemed and
taken to be that entered in the register of
such authorised person as aforesaid.

If such boat shall at any time have on
board a greater number of passengers than
the number allowed by the 5th Regula-
tion, the boatman or boatmen using or
having the charge thereof, shall forfeit
and pay a penalty of Forty Shillings. -
The license to ply for hire shall be
granted annually, and no person shall re-
ceive any such license, until he has been
examined by the person authorised to
grant licenses for the Wakatipu District,
and shall have obtained a certificate from
such examiner, that he thoroughly under-
stands the management of a boat. Pro-
vided that such authorised person instead
of himself examining such person, may
require him to produce a certificate of
competency from the Harbor Master or
Deputy-Harbor Master of the Port of
Otago. -
The license to be granted shall be in
the form in Schedule A to these Re-
gulations, and before the same shall be
granted, there shall be paid a fee of Five
Shillings for the same, to such authorised
person as aforesaid. -
Every licensed boatman shall have
the name and number of his boat legibly
painted on the inside of the sternsheets
of such boat, or on the after part of the
combinings of the main hatch of a sailing
vessel, decked, under a penalty of Forty
Shillings. -
No boats whatever are to be made
fast to any steps or landing place, or to be
kept longer at such landing place or steps,
than required for landing their passengers
or goods, under a penalty of Forty
Shillings.

any other person duly authorised at any
appointed ferry, wharf, or landing place
within the said District of Wakatipu,
under the Regulations which now are, or
