REPORT ON HAWKSBURY BUILDING STONE.

Dunedin, 7th April, 1863.

SIR— I have the honor to furnish you with the result of an examination of the sample of Building Stone from Hawksbury, which was forwarded to this Department for report.

This is a calcareous sandstone, similar to that obtained from Kaikorai and Caversham; and not only are its essential constituents the same, but they bear about the same proportion to each other.

When properly faced it appears almost impervious to water, but otherwise, it gradually loses its coherence.

It has the disadvantage of containing appreciable quantities of Lime and Soda, in forms which render them soluble in water; it is still, however, superior to either of the above stones.

It contains a considerable quantity of non-magnetic black sand, giving it a motley appearance on near inspection, and, among the insoluble matters, quartz and mica.

Some of the fossils in this stone are easily detected by the naked eye.

The following is an analysis of it:—

Soluble Silica .......................... .70
Alumina ................................. 2·94
Protoxide of Iron ....................... .90
Carbonate Lime ........................ 50·05
,, Magnesia ............................ 1·70
Chlorine ............................... Traces
Sulphuric Acid ..........................
Soda ....................................
Insoluble matter in hydrochloric acid .. 42·94
Water and loss .......................... .77

100·00

Specific Gravity, 2·597.

Hygoscopic water at time of analysis, 2·46.

I have the honor to be,

Sir,

Your most obedient servant,

RICHARD B. GORE,

For Dr. Hector, (Absent).

The Provincial Secretary,
