WARRANT

Appointing Returning Officers for the Election of Members of the Provincial Council of Otago.

By His Honor JOHN LARKINS CHEESE RICHARDSON, Esquire, Superintendent of the said Province.

WHEREAS, by Warrant under the hand of His Excellency Colonel Thomas Gore Browne, Governor of the Colony of New Zealand, dated the twenty-sixth day of August, one thousand eight hundred and sixty-one, His Excellency, in pursuance and exercise of the power and authority vested in the Governor of New Zealand by "The Provincial Elections Act, 1858," did delegate to me, the said John Larkins Cheese Richardson, Esquire, the Superintendent of the Province of Otago, in the said Colony, the power of appointing and removing Returning Officers for the election of the Superintendent, or of Members of the Provincial Council of the said Province, to be held and exercised by me from time to time as I shall think fit, so long as I shall hold the said office of Superintendent.

And whereas it is expedient to appoint the persons hereinafter named to be Returning Officers for the Electoral Districts after mentioned;

Now know ye, that I, John Larkins Cheese Richardson, Superintendent of the said Province, in pursuance of the power and authority in me vested as aforesaid, do hereby appoint the person whose name is hereinafter set under the name of each Electoral District for the election of Members of the Provincial Council of the said Province, to be the Returning Officer for such District, that is to say, for

1. Dunedin District — John Gillies, Esq., Dunedin.
2. Port Chalmers District — Mr. William Reid, Schoolmaster, Port Chalmers.
3. Oamaru Town District — Mr. J. Paradine, Schoolmaster, Oamaru.
4. North Harbour District — John Gillies, Esq., Dunedin.
5. Peninsular District — Mr. John Morrison, Schoolmaster, Anderson’s Bay.
6. Waikari District — John Gillies, Esq., Dunedin.
7. Green Island and Caversham District — John Gillies, Esq., Dunedin.
8. Taieri District — Mr. James Waddell, Schoolmaster, East Taieri.
9. Waihola District — Mr. Thos. Douglas, Schoolmaster, Waihola.
10. Tokomairiro District — Mr. Alexander Ayson, Schoolmaster, Tokomairiro.
11. Matau District — Mr. Alexander Gregor, Schoolmaster, Inch Clutha.

And I do further hereby appoint the several Polling Places hereinafter specified, to be the principal Polling Places for their respective Districts, viz, for—

1. Dunedin Town District — The Court-house, Dunedin.
2. Port Chalmers — The School-house, Port Chalmers.
3. Oamaru Town District — The School-house at Oamaru.
4. North Harbour District — The School-house, North East Valley.
5. Peninsula District — The School-house at Anderson’s Bay.
6. Waikari District — The School-house at Waikari.
7. Green Island and Caversham District — The School-house at Caversham.
8. Taieri District — The School-house at East Taieri.
9. Waihola District — The School-house at Waihola.
10. Tokomairiro District — The School-house at Tokomairiro.
11. Matau District — The School-house at Inch Clutha.
12. Clutha District — The School-house at Warepa.
13. Lindis District — Mr. Henry John Miller’s Station, Lindis.
14. Manuherikia District — Messrs. Hepburn and M’Master’s Station, Manuherikia.
15. Wakatip District — The Resident Magistrate’s Camp, at Wakatip.
16. Oamaru Country District — The School-house at Oamaru; Mr. Michael Gleeson’s Station, at Hampden.
17. Waikouaiti District — The School-house at Hawkesbury; the School-house at Goodwood.
18. Gold Fields District — The Court-house at Lawrence, Tuapeka; the Court-house at Waitahuna; the Court-house at Woolshed; the Court-house at Waipori; the Warden’s Camp at Mount Benger; the Warden’s Camp at Dunstan; the Court-house at Arrow River; the Court-house at Frankton, Wakatip.
