Invercargill, 24th November 1860.
His Honor the Superintendent.
SIR,—I have the honour to lay before you the returns of this district for September 1860.
The whole were returned to me as clean, but I have since that time discovered disease in two flocks, but of such a trifling nature that it was merely possible for me to swear to it. I have, however, in both cases laid an information, and I feel satisfied, from the vigorous measures adopted by both parties, that it will in all probability be no more heard of.
The Sheep of the district are looking remarkably well.
There has been an appearance of Foot-rot, but wherever it has been properly attended to, it has disappeared. The practice of lambing in the winter is, I trust, at an end. The loss that has resulted from it has been frightful, and I am not surprised that the increase has been so small.
A general confidence in this as a Wool-growing Country is steadily gaining ground, and large importations of Sheep are contemplated for the ensuing year,—larger, in fact, than I have yet known. I intend being in Dunedin in the beginning of next month, when I shall be glad to learn the result of my application to you regarding the Alpaca.
I have the honor to remain,
Your obedient servant,
WM. PINKERTON,
Inspector of Sheep for Southern Districts.
