✨ Sheep Statistics and Report

opposite Mount Valpy, from the junction of the Manuhierika.
The settlers in the Manuhierika Valley, Maniototo Plains, and the low country about the Molyneux Lake, have been more fortunate, although some of them had Ewes lambing in the winter. It is to be hoped that the settlers will profit by the experience some of them have had this year, by selecting a time better adapted for lambing, than the depth of winter, in high and cold positions.
The first and principal duty of a sheep farmer, if he wishes to succeed, after he has picked the best stock he can find, is to study the local climate of the country in which he is placed, so that he may find out the mildest and steadiest month in his particular district for lambing; after this is fixed, then follow up a regular system. If a rigid course of management is persevered with, should there be any accident or mistake, and the lambing has not succeeded to expectations, he would then be in a position to rectify any error that may have happened without damaging his stock. If breeding Sheep are not under perfect control, it is impossible to make the most of them.
I believe that there will be a great addition in the Province by some very large importations of Sheep that are expected this next year. There is plenty of room and grass upon the present Licensed Runs for five hundred thousand more, and it would then take the next years to stock them.
I have the honor to be,
Your Honor's obedient servant,
WM. LOGIE,
Inspector of Sheep, Northern District.
