signal. I have also erected two Beacons
on the Sand Hills, near the Bombay Rock,
to mark the channel inside the bar; also,
a small Beacon to show the position of a
Reef extending considerably across the
channel below the Maori village, and have
instructed Mr. Oates to more three Buoys,
first opportunity, on the Sandspit and
Reef abreast of the Mokomok, thus mark-
ing off the channel above all danger. On
the bar there is a depth of fourteen feet at
low water, neap tides.

At the Bluff Harbour I have moored
two Buoys—one on the outer and inner
ends of the Bank abreast of the Custom-
house—and send, per "Oberon," another
Buoy to be moored on the Reef near
McDonald's house. In taking soundings
in the harbour, I had a depth of three
fathoms from Spencer's Island down the
west channel to Captain Elles' house, and
from abreast of the Custom-house a gra-
dual deepening to five fathoms at low water,
neap tides. The cutter "Alma" is now
cruising in the Straits every day, weather
permitting, and as her anchorage is in a
convenient position, the Pilot can proceed
to the point of the Bluff in the heaviest
weather. Having passed her in the "Ob-
eron" in a fresh westerly breeze on the
ebb, when the sea is at the worst, I had
an opportunity of witnessing her excellent
sea qualities, of which the Pilot and crew
have also expressed their entire satisfac-
tion. I am satisfied that the "Alma" is
well adapted to meet the present require-
ments of the South; she is manned with
two men and a Pilot, who have instruc-
tions to board vessels bound to the New
River as well as the Bluff.

I cannot make a report to 'your Honor
of the Mataura and Wiakawa, having had
no opportunity of visiting these Ports.

At the Clutha Beacons have for some-
time been erected, shewing the position of
the Rock on the Bar and the channel
across.

From the shifting nature of the chan-
nel at the Taieri, I do not think it neces-
sary to put up leading marks until the
expense of effectually closing up one
channel can be gone into.

I will furnish your Honor with Sailing
directions, for the different Ports in the
South, as soon as I can get them drawn
up.

I have the honor to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient Servant,
WM. THOMSON,
Harbour Master.
