NOTICE TO MARINERS
FREQUENTING NEW RIVER, JACOB\'S
RIVER, AND BLUFF.
PROVINCE OF OTAGO, NEW ZEALAND.
Port Chalmers, 1st September 1860.
To His Honor the Superintendent.
SIRβI beg to advise your Honor of my
return from the South on the 30th
ult., per Steamer \"Oberon.\"
I take this opportunity to lay before
your Honor the following Report of works
done in the different Harbours at the
South.
At Jacob\'s River, I have erected two
Beacons on the Maori Reserve to mark
the channel across the Bar, in which there
is a depth of nine feet at high water, neap
tides; also, two Beacons on the Govern-
ment Reserve, south side of the River,
shewing the channel inside the Bar, in
which the shoalest part has a depth of
twelve feet at high water, neap tides.
The \"Oberon\" at present cannot lay
alongside of the Jetty in safety, and in
neap tides cannot get alongside at all.
Having seen Mr. Roy, Engineer, I
pointed out to him the necessity for hav-
ing a vessel moored end on to the tide, as
it is so rapid, and that the vessel might
lay on level ground, it will necessitate the
extension of the Jetty about fourteen feet
on one side. As there are larger vessels
visiting that port than can get into the
harbour, I would recommend that moor-
ings be laid down in the bay, which would
enable them to hold on with safety in any
weather.
At the New River, I found it necessary
to keep the Pilot with two men at the
station, as vessels proceeding to sea in-
variably require the services of a boat to
tow with in beating across the bar, and
very frequently in the river. I have
erected, on a commanding height, a Flag-
staff, with a large white Ball on the yard,
by which the Pilot can steer a vessel into
safe anchorage in the following manner :β
If the vessel be too far to the southward,
the Ball will be hauled out to the north
yard arm; if too far to the northward, it
will be hauled out to the south yard arm.
There are also two Beacons erected by
Mr. Oates, Assistant Harbour Master, at
the Pilot Station, shewing the present
channel across the bar; as they are not
seen by vessels approaching the river from
the southward, and as the appearance of
the entrance is very apt to mislead a
stranger, and the channel occasionally
shifting, I decided on having the above
