of Dunedin District in the Provincial Council of the said Province, in place of William Henry Cutten, Esquire, who has resigned his seat in the said Council.

Now, therefore, I, the said Alfred Chetham Strode, Esquire, Returning Officer for the said Town of Dunedin District, do hereby, in pursuance of the said recited Writ, give notice that a Public Meeting of the electors of the said Town of Dunedin District will be holden in the Hall of the Mechanics’ Institute, Dunedin, on Thursday the Twenty-seventh day of August inst., at 12 o’clock noon, for the purpose of nominating One Person to serve as a member for the Town of Dunedin District in the Provincial Council of the said Province; and in the event of a Poll being demanded for the Candidates, or any of them, such Polling shall take place on Friday, the Twenty-eighth day of August inst., in the Hall of the Mechanics’ Institute, Dunedin aforesaid, the voting at the above-named Polling Place to commence at ten o’clock in the morning of the said day, and to close at four o’clock in the afternoon of the said day.

Dated at the Resident Magistrate’s Court, at Dunedin, this Eleventh day of August, One Thousand Eight Hundred and Fifty-seven.

PROCLAMATION.

By His Honor William Cargill, Esquire, Superintendent of the Province of Otago.

WHEREAS by an Ordinance passed by the Superintendent and Provincial Council of the Province of Otago, intituled “An Ordinance to establish and regulate Ferries, Session I., No. 8,” it is among other things enacted that “It shall be lawful for the Superintendent to authorise Ferries to be established and erected at convenient places on the rivers, creeks, and lakes within the Province of Otago, for the conveyance of passengers, animals, and goods across the same;” and whereas by section 3 of the “Ferries Ordinance Amendment Ordinance, 1856,” passed by the said Superintendent and Council, it is enacted that “Every Ferry shall be deemed to be a Public Ferry within the meaning of this Ordinance, which shall be proclaimed to be such by the Superintendent, with the advice and consent of his Executive Council, by proclamation to be inserted in the Provincial Government Gazette;” and whereas it is expedient, that the Ferry established at the mouth of the New River, in the Province of Otago, and known by the name of the New River Ferry, should be proclaimed a Public Ferry. Now therefore I, the said Superintendent, with the advice and consent of my Executive Council, do hereby, in virtue of the powers vested in me by the said Ordinances, proclaim the said Ferry to be a Public Ferry within the meaning of the before recited “Ferries Ordinance Amendment Ordinance, 1856.”

Given under my hand, and issued under the Public Seal of the Province of Otago, at Government House, Dunedin, this Twenty-third day of July, One Thousand Eight Hundred and Fifty-seven.

NOTICE.

NEW RIVER FERRY.

BY virtue of the powers in me vested by the “Ferries Ordinance, 1856,” I, the Superintendent of the Province of Otago, with the advice and consent of the Executive Council, do hereby give notice that the authorised Fares chargeable at the New River Ferry for persons and animals conveyed across the same, are the following, viz.:

Across the New River.

For a single person .................. 4s. 0d.
For two or more do., each ............ 3s. 0d.
For each Man and Horse ............. 8s. 0d.
For two or more Horses belonging to the same owner, each ........ 4s. 0d.
For each head of Great Cattle or a single Horse ................ 5s. 0d.
For each Sheep when not exceeding 300 ......................... 0s. 3d.
For each Sheep when above 300 and not exceeding 600 .......... 0s. 2½d.
For each Sheep when 600 and upwards ......................... 0s. 2d.

Across the Mokamoko.

For each person ..................... 0s. 6d.

Further, I hereby give notice that the Mail, and persons exhibiting a certificate under the hand of the Superintendent that they are on duty under the employment of the Government, are exempt from the payment of said Fares.
