PROCLAMATION
By His Honor William Cargill,
Esquire, Superintendent of the
Province of Otago.
WHEREAS by an Ordinance enacted by the Lieutenant-Governor of New Zealand, by and with the consent of the Legislative Council thereof, Session VII., No. 7, intituled "An Ordinance for the Regulation of Prisons," it is enacted that "it shall be lawful for His Excellency the Governor, from time to time, as to him shall seem meet, by Proclamation, to declare any House, Building, Enclosure, or Place, to be a Public Gaol: and from and after the publication of any such Proclamation, such House, Building, Enclosure, or Place, shall be deemed and taken to be a Public Gaol."
And whereas, by another Ordinance enacted by the Superintendent of the Province of Otago, by and with the advice of the Provincial Council thereof, Session I., No. 6, intituled "An Ordinance to empower the Superintendent of the Province of Otago to perform certain acts heretofore performed by the Governor or Lieutenant-Governors of New Zealand, and by the Resident Magistrate of Otago," it is provided that all such powers as are conferred by the Ordinances enumerated in the Schedule thereto appended, upon the Governor-in-Chief, Governors, or Lieutenant-Governors, or the Officer Administering the Government of the Colony or Province for the time being, are thereby, within the Province of Otago, conferred on the Superintendent thereof: And whereas the Ordinance aforesaid is included in the said Schedule: And whereas it is desirable that the Building now erected and known as the Lock-up House in the Town of Campbelltown, in the Province of Otago, should be proclaimed to be a Public Gaol of the Colony.
Now therefore I, the said Superintendent of the Province of Otago, do hereby proclaim and declare that the Building aforesaid shall be deemed and taken to be one of the Public Gaols of the Colony of New Zealand.
Given under my hand and issued under the Public Seal of the Province of Otago, at Government House, Dunedin, this Eleventh day of February, One Thousand Eight Hundred and Fifty-seven.
