Call for Nominations for the Education Council of Aotearoa New Zealand

On behalf of the Minister of Education, the Ministry of Education is seeking candidates who are interested in becoming members of the Education Council pursuant to Schedule 21 of the Education Act 1989.

Nominations open 16 June 2016 and close 21 July 2016.

The Minister will appoint six members, three starting in December 2016 and three starting in July 2017. Appointments are for terms of up to three years.

The appointment process will begin with candidates working through an online application process. As part of the appointment process, candidates will be required to provide a curriculum vitae and, if shortlisted, be required to attend an interview and be the subject of probity checks.

In making appointments, in accordance with Schedule 21, subclause 5, the Minister must have regard to the collective skills, experience, and knowledge making up the overall composition of the council, and take account of candidates' ability to carry out the duties of members, including:

i. knowledge of education;

ii. experience of governance;

iii. leadership experience and skills;

iv. financial skills; and

v. understanding of the partnership principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.

The Education Council is made up of nine members, with at least five members selected from nominations. At least five members must be registered teachers with a current practising certificate.

Board of Trustees Election Extension Notice

Pursuant to clause 9(2) of the Sixth Schedule to the Education Act 1989, and with delegated authority from the Minister of Education, I hereby extend the period for closing the polls, and all subsequent actions in accordance with the Education (School Trustee Elections) Regulations 2000, for the elections of representatives for Mahurangi College (24) and Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Koutu (1153).

The elections must be held by 8 July 2016.

This notice takes effect on the day of publication in the New Zealand Gazette.
