Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992

Intention to Create Approved Codes of Practice for Asbestos, and Worker Representation and Participation

Notice that the Secretary of Labour (a position now warranted to the Acting Chief Executive Designate, WorkSafe New Zealand) has asked the Minister of Labour to note WorkSafe’s intention to create Approved Codes of Practice (ACOPs) pursuant to section 20 of the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992.

These codes will set out a statement of preferred work practices or arrangements for the health and safety practices for asbestos and worker representation and participation.

In order to support the implementation of the proposed Health and Safety at Work Act and associated Regulations, guidance material is required.

A review of the guidance development process has identified three ACOPs to be delivered:

  1. How to manage and control asbestos in the workplace.
  2. How to safely remove asbestos.
  3. Worker representation and participation.

Interested parties will be invited to comment on the proposed codes when they are developed.

Dated at Wellington this 9th day of January 2014.
