Social Security Act 1964

Approval for Rural Assistance for Drought-affected Areas Under the Special Needs Grants Programme

Under clauses 18.2 and 18.6 of the Special Needs Grants Programme, as established and approved on 18 December 1998* under section 124(1)(d) of the Social Security Act 1964 (the programme), I give my approval for Part 6 of the programme to apply as follows:

Rural Assistance – Farmers

1. Farmers in the affected areas whose land-based industries are directly affected by the Summer 2011 drought are eligible to be considered for financial assistance under Part 6 of the programme.

2. In relation to those farmers, Part 6 of the programme applies for the applicable period, unless further extended by the Minister.

3. In this approval:

   affected areas means:

   (a) the districts of the territorial authorities specified in Schedule 1 (being districts that the Minister of Agriculture has declared, before the date of this approval, are affected by the Summer 2011 drought);

   (b) the district of any territorial authority specified in Schedule 2 that the Minister of Agriculture declares, by notice to the public given after the date of this approval, is affected by the Summer 2011 drought.

   applicable period means:

   (a) in relation to the districts referred to in Schedule 1, the period beginning on 1 January 2011 and ending on the close of 31 March 2011;

   (b) in relation to a district referred to in Schedule 2, the period:

   (i) beginning on the later of 1 January 2011 and the date the Minister of Agriculture declares the district is affected by the Summer 2011 drought; and

   (ii) ending on the close of 31 March 2011.

   Summer 2011 drought means the medium scale adverse event due to lack of rainfall in the latter part of 2010.
