Notice of Proposed Marine Mammal Sanctuary

The Minister of Conservation gives notice under section 22 of the Marine Mammals Protection Act 1978 that he proposes to change the name and boundaries of the existing marine mammal sanctuary near the New Zealand coast to provide protection for the nationally critical Maui’s dolphin.

The proposed sanctuary extends along the west coast of the North Island from the mouth of the Waitakere River (Auckland) to Oakura (near New Plymouth), extending up to 20 nautical miles (approximately 37 kilometres) offshore and including the entrance to Manukau Harbour, Port Waikato, and Kawhia Harbour.

The sanctuary is shown on the above map.

Any person may obtain from the Department of Conservation a copy of a statement about the proposed sanctuary and make written submissions on the proposal. Submissions must be made by 5:00 PM on Friday, 19 November 2010 and should be sent to:
