  • that supports students to develop Te Āhua o ā Tātou Ākonga as expressed in Te Marautanga o Aotearoa

  • that is underpinned by Ngā Mātāpono Whānui as expressed in Te Marautanga o Aotearoa

  • in which Ngā Uara, Ngā Waiaro as expressed in Te Marautanga o Aotearoa are encouraged and modelled and are explored by students

  • that supports students to gain confidence in Te Reo Māori as expressed in Te Marautanga o Aotearoa

  • that takes account of He Toi Mātauranga, He Mana Tangata as expressed in Te Marautanga o Aotearoa.

A board of trustees of a school with a bilingual class or classes where Māori is one of the languages of instruction may develop and implement a curriculum based on the foundation policy statements in Te Marautanga o Aotearoa for those classes and on the foundation policy statements in The New Zealand Curriculum for the rest of the school.

State schools that choose to adopt the foundation curriculum policy statements for The New Zealand Curriculum must provide learning and teaching programmes based on The New Zealand Curriculum.

State schools that choose to adopt the foundation curriculum policy statements based on Te Marautanga o Aotearoa must provide learning and teaching programmes based on Te Marautanga o Aotearoa.

State schools are to provide learning and teaching programmes underpinned by these foundation curriculum policy statements from the commencement date of 2 February 2010 in the case of those contained in The New Zealand Curriculum or from 1 February 2011 in the case of those contained in Te Marautanga o Aotearoa.

This notice revokes and replaces The New Zealand Curriculum Foundation Curriculum Policy Statements notified in the New Zealand Gazette, 24 January 2008, No. 9, page 251.

During the transition period between the publication of this notice and the applicable date set out above, schools may base their programmes of study on any set of national curriculum statements, but should work towards full implementation of the new curriculum requirements by 2 February 2010 or 1 February 2011 as the case may be.

National Curriculum: The National Curriculum Statements

Pursuant to section 60A of the Education Act 1989 (incorporating all amendments), the Minister of Education hereby publishes in The New Zealand Curriculum and Te Marautanga o Aotearoa, national curriculum statements for:

State schools are to provide learning and teaching programmes based on:

The National Curriculum statements in The New Zealand Curriculum, except that Level 1 and 2 Māori immersion settings that base their learning and teaching programmes on The New Zealand Curriculum must also provide learning and teaching programmes based on Te Reo Pākehā.

Or

The National Curriculum statements in Te Marautanga o Aotearoa

A board of trustees of a school with a bilingual class or classes where Māori is one of the languages of instruction may develop and implement teaching and learning programmes based on Te Marautanga o Aotearoa for those classes and on teaching and learning programmes in The New Zealand Curriculum for the rest of the school.

State schools that choose to provide learning and teaching programmes based on The New Zealand Curriculum must adopt the foundation curriculum policy statements for The New Zealand Curriculum.

State schools that choose to provide learning and teaching programmes based on Te Marautanga o Aotearoa must adopt the foundation curriculum policy statements for Te Marautanga o Aotearoa.

State schools that choose to provide learning and teaching programmes based on The New Zealand Curriculum must do so from the commencement date of 2 February 2010.

State schools that choose to provide learning and teaching programmes based on Te Marautanga o Aotearoa must do so from the commencement date of 1 February 2011.

The existing national curriculum statements, namely:

  • Social Studies in the New Zealand Curriculum – New Zealand Gazette, 10 February 2000, No. 11, page 270
  • Health and Physical Education in the New Zealand Curriculum – New Zealand Gazette, 13 December 2001, No. 170, page 4172
  • Arts in the New Zealand Curriculum – New Zealand Gazette, 18 December 2003, No. 173, page 4765

are hereby revoked with effect from 2 February 2011.

This notice revokes and replaces The New Zealand Curriculum: National Curriculum Statements notified in the New Zealand Gazette, 24 January 2008, No. 9, page 251.
