Compressed Gas Mixtures (Flammable) Group Standard (Amendment) Notice 2008

Pursuant to section 96B of the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996 ("the Act"), the Environmental Risk Management Authority issues the following notice.

Notice

1. Title—
   (1) This notice is the Compressed Gas Mixtures (Flammable) Group Standard (Amendment) Notice 2008 and is part of the principal notice.
   (2) In this notice, "principal notice" means the Compressed Gas Mixtures (Flammable) Group Standard 2006 (published in the Supplement to the New Zealand Gazette, 30 June 2006, No. 74, at page 2023).

2. Commencement—This notice comes into force 28 days after the date of notification in the New Zealand Gazette.

3. Amendments to principal notice—Omit Schedule 1, clause 22 of the notice.

   (2) Insert into clause 4(4)(b) of the notice, the following definition:

   LPG is defined as:

   A mixture of hydrocarbon gases liquefied by application of a few atmospheres pressure and/or refrigeration below their boiling points. The mixture consists of predominantly C3 and C4 hydrocarbons (propane and butanes) with small amounts of other hydrocarbons in the C1 to C7 range and additives, subject to the following limits:

   • Ethane: Maximum 5%
   • Propane: Maximum 100%
   • Butanes: Maximum 100%
   • Propylene: Maximum 5%
   • Unsaturated hydrocarbons other than propylene: Maximum 0.3%
   • Butadiene: Maximum 0.1%
   • Additives: (each <0.1% v/v)
     • Anti-icing agents
     • Odorants

   Also known as:

   • Fuels, liquefied petroleum gas
   • L.P.G.
   • Liquid petroleum gas
   • Petroleum gas liquefied

This notice, which comes into force 28 days after the date of notification in the New Zealand Gazette, amends the Compressed Gas Mixtures (Flammable) Group Standard to clarify that refrigerating systems are not covered by the Group Standard, but that the gas contained within such systems is, and to add a definition of “LPG”.
