Result of review
Submissions on the report will be analysed. If there is support from affected persons for continuation of an amended strategy, I propose to recommend to the Governor-General to amend the strategy by Order-in-Council and extend its duration for another 10-year term, in order to enhance the ability of the beekeeping industry to control American foulbrood disease.
Submissions
Any person may make submissions on the proposed strategy in writing to the Minister for Biosecurity, c/o Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, PO Box 2526, Wellington (Attention: Holly Foran). Email: holly.foran@maf.govt.nz
Submissions should reach the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry no later than 5.00pm on Friday, 28 November 2008.
Every submission should state:
(a) those aspects of the proposed strategy that the submission supports; and
(b) those aspects of the proposed strategy that the submission opposes; and
(c) the reasons for the support and opposition identified; and
(d) any specific alternatives to the proposed strategy that the person making the submission wishes to recommend; and
(e) whether the person making the submission wishes to be heard in respect of that submission if a board of inquiry is held.

Controlled area revocation—Pursuant to section 131(4) of the Biosecurity Act 1993, I hereby revoke the controlled area notice dated the 17th day of January 2008, published in the New Zealand Gazette, 24 January 2008, No. 9, page 249, which took effect at 4.00pm on Thursday, 31 January 2008, regarding a designated area comprising:
All parts of New Zealand that fall within the boundaries of the local government regions of Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Taranaki, Hawke’s Bay, Manawatu-Wanganui, and Wellington, for the purpose of limiting the spread of Varroa mite (Varroa destructor, formerly known as Varroa jacobsoni), being an unwanted organism under the Biosecurity Act 1993.
- Pursuant to section 131(4) of the Biosecurity Act 1993, I hereby revoke the controlled area notice dated the 23rd day of July 2008, published in the New Zealand Gazette, 31 July 2008, No. 119, page 3142, on which took effect at 4.00pm on Friday, 1 August 2008, regarding a designated area comprising all parts of New Zealand that fall within the area described as:
Starting at the eastern tip of “Farewell Spit” follow the coastline in a westerly direction around the top of the South Island and in a southerly direction along the West Coast to the “Punakaiki River”; continue upstream along the “Punakaiki River” following the “Grey” and “Buller” district boundary to the confluence of “Rough River” and “Mills Creek”; continue straight in a north-easterly direction to the summit of “Mt Raoulia” at 1362m, then in a straight line south-east to the confluence of the “Grey River” and “Clarke River”; continue in an easterly direction following the “Grey” and “Buller” district boundary to its border with “Hurunui” district then follow in a north-easterly direction the “Buller” and “Hurunui” district boundary; continue in a north-easterly direction following the “Tasman” and “Hurunui” district boundary to its border with “Marlborough” district; continue in a south-easterly direction following the “Hurunui” and “Marlborough” district boundary to a spot height at 2020m where the “Sebastopol Range” meets the “Crimea Range”; continue straight in an easterly direction to the “Alma Saddle”, then easterly straight to the confluence of the “Acheron River” and “Guide River”; continue north-easterly straight to the confluence of the “Guide River” and an unnamed stream (New Zealand Map Grid reference 2521440E; 5885580N), then continue south-easterly straight to “Dillon Cone” at 2173m, then north-easterly straight to “Tinkers Saddle” in “Shanty Gully”; continue north-east straight to the summit of “Mead Hill” at 1068m; continue in a north-easterly direction straight to “Brian Boru” at 1110m in the “Chalk Range”; continue in a northerly direction straight to “The Rock” at 745m; continue north-east straight to “Needles” at 452m, then east straight to a spot height east of “Ward” at 284m; continue easterly to the coastline at “Chancet Rocks”; continue north following the coastline around the top of the South Island to the start point, the eastern point of “Farewell Spit”
for the purpose of limiting the spread of Varroa mite (Varroa destructor, formerly known as Varroa jacobsoni), being an unwanted organism under the Biosecurity Act 1993.
