Food Act 1981

New Zealand Emergency (Prescribed Food) Food Standard 2003

Pursuant to sections 11D and 11M of the Food Act 1981, notice is given that the New Zealand Emergency (Prescribed Food) Food Standard 2003 was issued by the Director-General of Agriculture and Forestry on 24 September 2003.

In respect of those persons who received notice of this emergency food standard, pursuant to section 11M (3) (e) of the Food Act 1981, the standard came into force upon service of the notification.

In all other cases, this emergency food standard will come into force upon notification in the New Zealand Gazette.

The New Zealand Emergency (Prescribed Food) Food Standard 2003 amends the New Zealand (Prescribed Foods) Food Standards 2002 by adding tahini or crushed sesame seeds or any food containing these products (including sesame seed paste, sesame paste, sesame seed butter, hamas tahini, tahina, tahine, halva dessert mix, hummus halawa, halva, helva and babaganoush).

The presence of pathogenic bacteria is the condition to be monitored.

Compliance with the New Zealand Emergency (Prescribed Food) Food Standard 2003 is mandatory.

It will remain in force for a maximum period of six months or, if a permanent amendment to the New Zealand (Prescribed Foods) Food Standards 2002 is required, until that permanent amendment to the standards is introduced (whichever is earlier).

The New Zealand Emergency (Prescribed Food) Food Standard 2003 can be inspected at the New Zealand Food Safety Authority, South Tower, 86 Jervois Quay, Wellington, or may be viewed on the New Zealand Food Safety Authority web site:
