NEW ZEALAND GAZETTE
- I hereby establish in Turangi a composite school,
catering for Years 1–15, called Te Kura o Hirangi and
designate the school as a Designated Character School.
Aims, Purposes and Objectives of Te Kura o Hirangi
- Te Kura o Hirangi will provide:
A. A curriculum that actively promotes and fosters
pride in being Māori
A positive learning environment will be fostered
through eight essential principles:
- Spirituality.
- Self respect, pride.
- Patience, courage, calm and resilience.
- Life skills.
- Hospitality, kindness, caring.
- Creativity.
- Industriousness, self discipline, diligence.
- Cultural awareness.
Ancestors such as Ngātoroirangi, tribal expert,
warrior, chief and hero, will feature prominently in
curricula.
B. A curriculum that maintains the integrity of kaupapa
Māori and is delivered principally through
te reo Māori
The dialect and cultural practices of Tuwharetoa ki te
Mātāpuna will be the principal vehicles of
communication, instruction and delivery.
Whānau will be required to become actively involved
in learning te reo Māori me one tikanga.
C. A culturally appropriate environment that nurtures
and nourishes the mauri of the child
-
The front pillar will represent Knowledge with the
back wall representing ancient knowledge.
Students will seek the knowledge that
Tanetewānanga retrieved from Rangiātea. -
The rear pillar will represent Stewardship.
Students will learn their roles as kaitiaki of their
world. -
The central pillar will represent Relationships.
Students will acknowledge and respect all people. -
The ridgepole will represent Genealogy.
Students will explore familial links. -
The windows will represent Analysis, Debate and
Research.
Students will be enlightened through considered
discussion. -
The entrance will represent all Learners.
Students will be equipped with skills appropriate to
their world. -
The uniting principle, represented by the
foundations, will be Spirituality.There is a collective responsibility for wellbeing.
Constitution of the Board of Trustees
- The Board of Trustees of Te Kura o Hirangi shall
comprise:
(a) five people appointed by the Minister;
(b) the principal, or principal designate;
(c) not more than four persons co-opted by the board.

- Manaaki.

- Pukumahi.
- Whai tikanga.

Ko te Kaitiakitanga te tuarongo.
Kia tupu ake ngā tamariki hei Kaitiaki i ngā
painga huhua o te ao. -
Ko te Whanaungatanga te poutokomanawa.
Ko te puna aroha tēnei, kia paiheretia ngā tāngata
katoa ahakoa nō hea, ahakoa ko wai. -
Ko te Whakapapa te tāhūhū.
Te whaiao, te aomārama, ka puta ngā mea katoa. -
Ko te Wānanga me te Rangahau ngā matapihi.
Tirohia ā muri hei oranga mō mua. -
Ko te Whakatupuranga te roro o te whare.
Kia ngākaunui ki te whai i ngā toi hou, ki te tito, ki
te hanga hoki. -
Ko te Wairuatanga te piripiringa o te whare.
Ko te amorangi ki mua, ko te hāpai ō ki muri.
Ko te āhua o te Poari Whakahaere
- Ka pēnei te Poari Whakahaere i Te Kura o Hirangi:
(a) Tokorima ngā tāngata e tohua ana e te Minita;
(b) Ko te tumuaki, te Tumuaki mā naianei rānei;
(c) Tokowhā (Kaua e nuku atu) ngā tāngata ka
karangahia e te Poari.
Ka tohua i te Whanganui a Tara i tēnei 9 rā o Mahuru 2003.
