Electoral District and Nature of Objection

Objection I W McDougall
Objects to the inclusion of Rangariri, Te Kauwhata, Mercer, Maramarua,
Pokeno, Mangatawhiri, Kaiaua and Matingarahi in the proposed Piako
electorate, as these areas have a stronger community of interest with the
proposed Port Waikato electorate.

Suggested solution Move these areas into the Port Waikato electorate. To
compensate for this shift in population, the southern part of Port Waikato
below the Franklin District Council line west of SH1 should be included in the
Piako electorate because of their strong affiliation with the Waikato. Rename
the Port Waikato electorate ‘Franklin’ to reflect these changes.

Or:

Create two alternative electorates with an east-west orientation, rather than
north-south orientation. A new ‘Counties’ electorate would include the
northern areas of Piako and Port Waikato down to approximately
Te Kauwhata. A new ‘Waikato’ electorate would almost encircle Hamilton
below this boundary with three primary sections: Waikato District towns,
Matamata-Piako District towns and Cambridge-Ohaupo. This area almost
corresponds with the Central Waikato region. With population growth in
Franklin greater than in Waikato, the boundary between these electorates
could shift northwards as required while still remaining stable in character.
