Notice of Final Decision to Assign Place Names in the Ross Dependency Area, Antarctica

Notice is hereby given of the final decisions of the New Zealand Geographic Board to assign the names stated in the first column of the Schedule below, to the places described in the second column of the said Schedule and that such decisions shall take effect on 20 February 2001.

Ross Island—New Names

Keys Point
77º14´S, 166º022´E. A projecting point of land at McDonald Beach, 1.61 kilometres north-west of Inclusion Hill in north-west Ross Island.

Takahe Nunatak
77º13´S, 166º48´E. The northern of two similar nunataks that lie 0.48 kilometres apart and 5.31 kilometres north north-east of Mount Bird in north-west Ross Island. It rises to approximately 1100 metres and, like Kakapo Nunatak close south-west, appears to be part of an ice-covered crater rim.

Kakapo Nunatak
77º13´S, 166º48´E. The southern of two similar nunataks that lie 0.48 kilometres apart and 5.31 kilometres north north-east of Mount Bird in north-west Ross Island. It rises to approximately 1200 metres and, like Takahe Nunatak close north-east, appears to be part of an ice-covered crater rim.

Norman Crag
77º14´S, 166º45´E. A rugged nunatak 3.54 kilometres north of the summit of Mount Bird, Ross Island. The feature has a divided summit area and rises to over 1400 metres.

Ruru Crests
77º14´S, 166º38´E. Two parallel rock ridges 3.54 kilometres north-west of the summit of Mount Bird, Ross Island. The feature rises to approximately 1400 metres.

Nash Peak
77º15´S, 166º45´E. A prominent peak 2.25 kilometres north of the Mount Bird summit in north-west Ross Island. The feature rises to over 1600 metres.

Wong Peak
77º15´S, 166º50´E. A peak 2.57 kilometres north-east of the summit of Mount Bird in north-west Ross Island. The feature rises to over 1600 metres.

Beeby Peak
77º15´S, 166º54´E. A peak 3.86 kilometres east north-east of the summit of Mount Bird in north-west Ross Island. The feature rises to approximately 1400 metres.

Keys Hill
77º17´S, 166º35´E. A hill (approximately 1100 metres) located at the head of Shearwater Glacier, 3.54 kilometres west south-west of the summit of Mount Bird in north-west Ross Island.

Kea Nunataks
77º17´S, 166º51´E. A line of several nunataks 1.93 kilometres south-east of the summit of Mount Bird, Ross Island. The feature trends north-west/south-east and is 2.41 kilometres long.

Kaka Nunatak
77º17´S, 166º52´E. The most prominent of the Kea Nunataks, rising to approximately 1400 metres near the centre of the group. It stands 3.22 kilometres south-east of the summit of Mount Bird in north-west Ross Island.

Tazieff Rocks
77º27´S, 166º30´E. A nunatak 1.29 kilometres south-east of Micou Point, Ross Island. It rises to approximately 200 metres at the south end of Endeavour Piedmont Glacier.

Krall Crags
77º27´S, 166º48´E. Two rock summits rising to over 1400 metres on the north-west slope of Mount Erebus, Ross Island. The feature is 1.93 kilometres north-west of Abbott Peak.

Tarr Nunatak
77º29´S, 166º53´E. A nunatak rising to approximately 1700 metres on the north-west slope of Mount Erebus, Ross Island. The feature is 1.93 kilometres south south-west of Abbott Peak.

Alcorta Rocks
77º30´S, 166º22´E. A nunatak on the east shore of Maumee Bight, Ross Island, 2.57 kilometres east north-east of Rocky Point. The feature rises to approximately 100 metres and is distinctive because three ridges radiate from the centre.

Cashman Crags
77º32´S, 166º51´E. Two rock summits at approximately 1500 metres on the west slope of Mount Erebus, Ross Island. The feature is 0.97 kilometres south-west of Hoopers Shoulder.

Tech Crags
77º37´S, 166º45´E. A narrow broken ridge 3.22 kilometres south of Williams Cliff on Ross Island. The feature rises to approximately 1000 metres and marks a declivity along the north flank of broad Turks Head Ridge, from which ice moves to Pakaru Icefalls.

Grazyna Bluff
77º38´S, 166º49´E. A rock bluff rising to approximately 600 metres in the south part of Turks Head Ridge, Ross Island. The bluff is 2.41 kilometres north north-east of Turks Head.

Esser Bluff
77º38´S, 166º54´E. A rock bluff rising to approximately 600 metres on the south-east margin of Turks Head Ridge, Ross Island. The bluff is 1.77 kilometres east north-east of Grazyna Bluff.

Centipede Nunatak
77º45´S, 166º53´E. A narrow nunatak that is 0.48 kilometres long, located 1.29 kilometres north-west of Ford Rock in central Hut Point Peninsula, Ross Island.

Rodgers Point
77º46´S, 166º47´E. A point 4.02 kilometres north-east of Knob Point on the west side of Hut Point Peninsula, Ross Island.

Ackley Point
77º47´S, 166º55´E. An ice-covered point 1.61 kilometres south-east of Cone Hill on the east side of Hut Point Peninsula, Ross Island. The point is elevated at the juncture with McMurdo Ice Shelf.

Sheppard Crater
77º48´S, 166º50´E. A distinctive breached crater rising to 200 metres, about 1.29 kilometres east of Castle Rock on Hut Point Peninsula, Ross Island.

Polar Bear Point
77º49´S, 166º51´E. An ice-covered point 1.93 kilometres south-east of Castle Rock on the east side of Hut Point Peninsula, Ross Island. A breached crater stands 1.13 kilometres north north-west but no rock is exposed on the point, which is well defined and elevated at the juncture with McMurdo Ice Shelf.
