Land Transport Act 1998

Notification of Exemptions From Land Transport Rules

Pursuant to section 166 (3) of the Land Transport Act 1998, I, William John McCook, General Manager, Operations, Land Transport Safety Authority, notify the following exemptions from Land Transport Rules were made under section 166 (1) of that Act, between 1 July 2000 and 30 September 2000:

Traffic Regulations 1976

Traffic Signsโ€”Wellington ATMS

Pursuant to Regulation 129 (6) of the Traffic Regulations 1976 and an instrument of sub-delegation by the Director of Land Transport dated 3 May 1999, I, John Paul Edgar, Manager Safer Roads, approve the erection, installation and maintenance of signs described in Schedule 1, installed as a component of the Advanced Traffic Management System applying on sections of State Highway No. 1 at Wellington and subject to the conditions detailed in Schedule 2 of this notice.

Schedule 1

Information Signs

  1. General purpose of signs:

    The information signs are variable message signs providing a range of information to motorists including details about:

    (a) traffic and road conditions applying and advice on alternative actions motorists might take as a result; or

    (b) future activity on or near the State highway which will affect motorists using the highway in terms of route choice or travel delays.

  2. Description of signs:

    (a) Shape and Size: Rectangular and able to accommodate up to three lines of legend.

    (b) Background Colour: Black.

    (c) Border: Black.

    (d) Lettering: The letters must be yellow, formed by the illumination of light emitting diodes, and conform with, or have similar visual characteristics to, standard alphabets for road signs with upper case characters of a size:

    (i) not smaller than 300mm in height on the sign erected within the 50 kilometres per hour speed limit area of Newlands Road; or

    (ii) otherwise not smaller than 400mm in height.

    (e) Legend: The wording of any legend used must conform to one of those contained in the library of messages approved in terms of, or one developed by means of the protocol defined in, the Wellington ATMS Operating Procedures Manual approved from time to time by the Chief Executive, Transit New Zealand.
