As it invests under each of these outputs, the Foundation will give priority to portfolios of research that meet the following investment criteria:

  • scientific and technological excellence;
  • boost competitiveness of New Zealand enterprises; and
  • develop a robust infrastructure to underpin economic development.

Output Class 011—Māori Knowledge and Development Research

Description

This class provides funding to develop research capability and knowledge for Māori development. It will encourage excellence in the delivery of knowledge for Māori, consolidate the Māori knowledge base, and broaden and deepen the Māori research skill base in New Zealand.

$2,253,000

As it invests under each of these outputs, the Foundation will give priority to portfolios of research that meet the following investment criteria:

  • relevance and contribution to improving outcomes for Māori;
  • contribution to the development of Māori research capability; and
  • research excellence.

Output Class 012—Health Research

Description

This class of outputs supports public good research, science and technology that improves the health status of New Zealanders. The Foundation for Research, Science and Technology will invest, on behalf of the Minister, in research portfolios that have the greatest potential to improve the health and quality of life of New Zealanders.

$1,050,000

Outputs comprise the following:

  • Knowledge and understanding of the factors influencing health status, including health disparities between New Zealanders.
  • Technology, products and services for improving health status and reducing health inequalities.

As it invests under each of these outputs, the Foundation will give priority to portfolios of research that meet the following investment criteria:

  • scientific and technological excellence; and
  • contribution to improving health and social well-being.

Output Class 013—Social Research

Description

This output class supports public good research, science and technology that improves societal well-being. The Foundation for Research, Science and Technology will invest, on behalf of the Minister, in science and research portfolios that have the greatest potential to have a positive impact on families and communities, culture and identity.

$4,337,000

Outputs will be research on community and family dynamics.

As it invests under each of these outputs, the Foundation will give priority to portfolios of research that meet the following investment criteria:

  • scientific and technological excellence; and
  • contribution to improving social well being.

Output Class 014—Environmental Research

Description

This output class supports public good research, science and technology that enhances the understanding and management of our environment. The research contributes to the understanding of ecosystems, as well as understanding the species, habitats and systems that contribute to them, the human, pests and other influences to which they are exposed.

It provides the knowledge that underpins the management, protection and enhancement of natural ecosystems. It also includes sustainable use of ecosystems and the productive sector’s environment. At a global level these outputs contribute to an understanding of the global biophysical environment and the impact of atmospheric, climatic and other global changes on natural, agricultural and other human ecosystems. The Foundation for Research, Science and Technology will invest, on behalf of the Minister, in science and research portfolios that generate widespread benefits over time.

Outputs comprise the following:

  • Improving the health, diversity and resilience of New Zealand ecosystems. The outputs will increase knowledge and awareness of the state of New Zealand’s ecosystems.
    $29,066,000

  • Increasing understanding of the global biophysical environment. The outputs will increase knowledge of the global environment.
    $25,119,400

  • Improving the quality of human environments. The outputs will enhance capacity to use and manage ecosystems efficiently and sustainably.
    $4,272,000

  • Sustainable management of the productive sector’s environment.
    $25,546,600

As it invests under each of these outputs, the Foundation will give priority to portfolios of research that meet the following investment criteria:

  • scientific and technological excellence; and
  • contributions made to the understanding and management of natural and human induced environmental systems.
  1. Delete all references to “14 impact expectations” and replace with “6 impact expectations”.

On page 1506 of the previous notice delete the bullet point list beginning “expanding the knowledge base” and concluding with “improving social well-being”.

Replace with the following text:

  • enhancing New Zealand’s ability to create new knowledge;
  • stimulating an innovative and entrepreneurial culture;
  • enabling the success of new New Zealand enterprises in the global knowledge economy;
  • putting knowledge and technology to work in New Zealand enterprises;
  • gaining knowledge of the environment to improve quality and mitigate risks; and
  • building knowledge which contributes to social well-being.
