  1. CLOSED WATERS

3.1 No licence holder shall fish for sports fish in the following waters:

  • Lake Marion
  • Taylors Drain to its confluence with the Wairarapa Stream.
  • The Avon River between the Armagh and Barbados Street bridges.
  • St Annes Lagoon near Cheviot.
  • The Glenariffe Stream during February in the section between the signpost (located 160 metres below the hatchery outfall) and the road bridge immediately upstream of the hatchery.
  • The tailrace of the Highbank Power Station.
  • Within 100 metres of the outfall of any licenced fish farm.
  • The Kowai River and its tributaries including Hacketts Creek for salmon fishing from March 1 to September 30.
  1. AUTHORISED TACKLE

4.1 No licence holder when fishing for sports fish shall:
4.1.1 Use any unsportsmanlike device or method.
4.1.2 Use any artificial fly having more than one hook or having a multiple hook in Flyfishing Only Waters.
4.1.3 Use more than two hooks when fishing for salmon with natural bait.

4.2 There shall be no restriction on lures or baits in the Kaiapoi Lakes, Rotokohatu Lake or Monopolies Pond coarse fishing areas.

4.3 When playing a sportsfish a gaff may be used to assist in the landing of that fish.

  1. FLY FISHING ONLY WATERS

    Lake Ida
    Little Lake Ida
    Lake Monck (Catherine)

    Lake Sarah
    Lake Marymere
    Lake Sheppard

  2. BAIT FISHING WATERS

6.1 Bait fishing for trout is permitted in the eastern zone only.

6.2 Bait fishing for salmon is permitted in the Kaiapoi River only.

  1. USE OF BOATS.

7.1 Fishing from boats which are being mechanically propelled is permitted in:

  • All rivers
  • Lake Ellesmere (Te Waihora)
  • Lake Forsyth
  • Lake Coleridge
  • Lake Sumner

7.2 Fishing from boats which are not being mechanically propelled is permitted in:

  • All rivers
  • All eastern zone lakes
  • Lake Coleridge
  • Lake Evelyn
  • Lake Selfe
  • Lake Georgina
  • Lake Lyndon
  • Lake Pearson
  • Lake Taylor
  • Loch Katrine
  • Lake Sumner

7.3 Anglers fishing from boats which are being mechanically propelled must stay at least 100 metres from any angler fishing from the shore.

  1. DAILY LIMIT BAGS

8.1 Catch and Release Only
All sports fish caught in the following waters must be released immediately back into the waters from which they were taken with as little injury as possible:

  • Lake Marymere
  • Kaiapoi Lakes
  • Ashley River above the Oxford-Glentui Bridge
  • Broken River and all of its tributaries (including Winding Creek, Porter River and Slovens Creek).
