This notice comes into effect on the 1st day of September 1998.
Definitions
“Articulated lowbed trailer” means a gooseneck semi-trailer with the loading area of the semi-trailer a maximum of 1.1 metres off the ground.
“Indivisible load” means a load which cannot reasonably (without disproportionate effort, expense or risk of damage to the load) be divided into two or more sections for road transport, and cannot be carried on a vehicle within the dimension limits set out in the Traffic Regulations 1976. ISO containers and similar types of containers with closed tops are excluded from this definition.
“Load divider trailer” means a type of short semi-trailer designed to load share but not to directly carry any goods, and with one or more axles, equipped with a king pin, a fifth wheel and other parts necessary for attaching it to the rear end of a prime mover and the front portion of a second gooseneck trailer.
“Trombone articulated trailer” means an extendible semi-trailer whose overall length can be increased for the purpose of carrying indivisible loads.
Operating Conditions
The vehicle types and loads described in this notice must be operated in compliance with the requirements set out in the document “Overdimension Vehicles and Loads: A Guideline to Operating Requirements” dated August 1998 produced by the Land Transport Safety Authority.
Approval for Loads
An indivisible load up to the dimension limits set out below may be transported on a road.
- Width and Forward Distance – 4.3 metres wide at 10.8 metres forward distance reducing to 2.5 metres wide at 13.0 metres forward distance in accordance with figure one.
- Overall Length – 25.0 metres
- Overall Height – 4.8 metres
- Front Overhang – 5.0 metres
- Rear Overhang – the lesser of 5.0 metres (6.0 metres for loads on articulated trailers) or 50% of the load length

General Approval for Vehicles
This approval relates only to vehicles which are principally designed for the carriage of overdimension and overweight loads and includes:
- Articulated lowbed and load divider trailers;
- Trombone and fixed length articulated and full trailers used for house haulage;
- Trombone articulated trailers used for general divisible goods in the closed position and indivisible goods in the open position;
