Classification of Medicines

Pursuant to section 106 (1) of the Medicines Act 1981, I, G. R. Boyd, Chief Advisor, Regulation and Safety, hereby declare the following:

  1. The medicines listed in Schedule 1 to this notice are classified as prescription medicines.
  2. The medicines listed in Schedule 2 to this notice are classified as restricted medicines.
  3. The medicines listed in Schedule 3 to this notice are classified as pharmacy-only medicines.

Every reference to a medicine in this notice applies whether the medicine is synthetic in origin or is from biological or mineral sources.

Unless specific reference is made otherwise, every reference applies also to medicines that are—

(a) Preparations and admixtures containing any proportion of any substance listed in the notice;
(b) Salts and esters of any substance listed in the notice;
(c) Preparations or extracts of biological materials listed in the notice;
(d) Salts or oxides of elements listed in the notice.

Where any reference is modified by a statement of the strength of the medicine, the strength is calculated using the free acid, base, alcohol or element unless specifically stated otherwise.

Prescription Medicines

astemizole
basiliximab
cervastatin
daclizumab
desonide

grepafloxacin
ibandronic acid
imiquimod
meloxicam

montelukast
orlistat
topotecan

Schedule 2

Restricted Medicines

amorolfine; for external use in medicines containing more than 0.25%

flurbiprofen; in throat lozenges containing 10 milligrams or less per lozenge

Schedule 3

Pharmacy-only Medicines

amorolfine; for external use in medicines containing 0.25% or less

ibuprofen; in liquid form for oral use in medicines which are sold in the manufacturer’s original pack containing 200 millilitres or less in volume and in strengths of 100 milligrams or less per 5 millilitres

levocabastine

Regulation 20 of the Medicines Regulations 1984 requires that all medicines sold without a practitioner’s prescription must include a consumer information panel on the label. Further, all material changes to a medicine (including changes to labelling), must be notified to the Director-General of Health in accordance with section 24 of the Medicines Act 1981.

Burial and Cremation Act 1964

Burial and Cremation Act (Operational Service) Notice 1998

Pursuant to section 15 (2) of the Burial and Cremation Act 1964, the Minister of Internal Affairs gives the following notice.

Notice

  1. Title and Commencement.—(1) This notice may be cited as the Burial and Cremation Act (Operational Service) Notice 1998.

  2. This notice comes into force on the 28th day after the date of its notification in the New Zealand Gazette.

  3. Operational Service.—The following service by members of Her Majesty’s Forces is hereby declared to be “operational service” for the purpose of section 15 of the Burial and Cremation Act 1964.

1914–1918 War

Members of the New Zealand, Imperial and Allied Forces who served overseas or at home between 4 August 1914 and 31 August 1921. Included are service personnel who were attested for overseas service but did not proceed overseas; New Zealand service personnel who served in Home Service Units between 4 August 1914 and 31 August 1921; and those who served in the Merchant Navy in the waters of a war zone.

1939–1945 War

Members of the New Zealand, Commonwealth and Allied Forces who served overseas or at home between 3 September 1939 and 31 December 1947. Included are New Zealand service personnel who were attested for overseas service but did not proceed overseas; New Zealand service personnel who served in Home Service Units between 3 September 1939 and 31 December 1947; and those who served in the Merchant Navy in the waters of a war zone. Those who served in Japan with “J” Force between August 1945 and March 1949 also qualify.

Korean War

Members of the New Zealand, Commonwealth and Allied Forces who served in Korea or in Korean waters between 27 June 1950 and 27 July 1953.

The Malayan Emergency and Confrontation With Indonesia

Members of the New Zealand and Commonwealth Forces who served in the Federated States of Malaya, Malaysia, Singapore, Borneo, or in surrounding waters from 16 June 1948 to 1966. Personnel who served on operations on the
