Matters at Inquiry

The authority will conduct an inquiry into the variations to standards prepared at full assessment of the following application:

Fibrinogen and thrombin in reformed meat, poultry and fish products (A308). An application from Lesnie’s Pty Limited, seeking approval for the use of Fibrimex, made from fibrinogen and thrombin, in the production of reformed meat, poultry and/or fish products.

You are invited to present written submissions to the authority on matters relevant to this inquiry, including the potential regulatory impact on consumers, industry and Government, by 27 August 1997.

Matters Before Council

Royal jelly (P154). The authority has developed a proposal under section 21 of the Australia New Zealand Food Authority Act 1991, to require an additional warning statement on the label of all royal jelly and royal jelly products sold in Australia and on the label of royal jelly and royal jelly products sold in New Zealand that are made in compliance with the Australian Food Standards Code. The authority has recommended that the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Council adopt a draft variation to the Australian Food Standards Code and decided, under section 37 of the Act to make its recommendation in relation to this proposal as a matter of urgency to avoid compromising an objective set out in section 10 of the Act, namely the protection of public health and safety.

Under section 37 of the Act, if the council adopts the draft variation, then as soon as is practicable after the adoption the authority must hold an inquiry under section 24 of the Act into the draft variation as if that variation had been the subject of a full assessment under section 23 and were a draft variation prepared under that section.

In New Zealand royal jelly products are regulated under the Dietary Supplements Regulations 1985. These regulations are not within the scope of the joint food standards arrangements with New Zealand and therefore this proposal will not extend to royal jelly products produced and sold in New Zealand under the Dietary Supplements Regulations 1985. In addition, this proposal will not affect the production and sale of royal jelly in New Zealand under the New Zealand Food Regulations 1984.
