Conservation

Marine Mammals Protection Act 1978

Application to take Marine Mammals

Pursuant to sections 4 and 5 of the Marine Mammals Protection Act 1978, the New Zealand King Salmon Company Limited has applied to the Director-General of Conservation for a permit to take seals at its 6 salmon farms in the Marlborough Sounds. Specifically, the application is for a permit to:

  1. Catch and release seals which have entered salmon cages;
  2. Harass seals while attempting to deter them from entering salmon farms; and
  3. Injure, attract, herd, disturb and possess seals in association with the above actions.

A copy of the full application can be obtained from the Department of Conservation, Monro Building, Private Bag 5, Nelson.

Any person wishing to make a submission on this application can do so by writing to the Regional Conservator, Department of Conservation, Private Bag 5, Nelson, within 28 days after the publication of this notice.

Import of Marine Mammal Material

Notice is given pursuant to section 5 (1) of the Marine Mammals Protection Act 1978, that Mr D. J. McClean has applied for an import permit to bring into New Zealand, 1 pair of seal skin boots (ring seal) and a model sleigh (containing leopard seal skin). The aforementioned seal species are exempt CITES requirements.

Persons wishing to lodge submissions on the application should send them to Regional Conservator, Conservation Department, Private Bag 4715, Christchurch, within 28 days of the publication of this notice.

Waikokowai School Board of Trustees Election

Acting with authority given to me by section 109 (5) of the Education Act 1989, I appoint Monday, the 15th day of September 1997 as the final date for voting in the election of 5 parent representatives for the board of trustees of Waikokowai School, near Huntly.

This notice will take effect the day after its publication in the New Zealand Gazette.

Amendment to Constitution of Council of The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand

Pursuant to section 170 of the Education Act 1989, the Minister of Education gives the following notice.

Notice

  1. This notice may be cited as the Constitution of The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand Notice 1997.

  2. This notice shall come into force on the day after the date of its publication in the New Zealand Gazette.

  3. The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand shall be constituted as follows:

    (a) Four members appointed by the Minister of Education.

    (b) The chief executive officer of The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand.

    (c) One permanent member of the academic staff of The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand elected by the permanent members of that staff.

    (d) One permanent member of the general staff of The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand elected by the permanent members of that staff.

    (e) One member who is or has been a student of The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand who shall represent the students of The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand and who shall be elected by the executive of The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand Students’ Association.

    (f) One member appointed by The Open Polytechnic of New Zealand Council after consultation with the New Zealand Employers’ Federation Incorporated.
