Explanatory Note

This note is not part of the order but it intended to indicate its general effect.

This order establishes the Kahurangi National Park which covers a total area of 452 002.15 hectares. The bulk of the park is derived from the former North West Nelson Forest Park and extends from the base of Farewell Spit to the Buller River in the south. The area is one of the largest unfringed protected areas in the country. It consists of large areas of virtually unmodified forest, internationally significant limestone and marble landscape areas and is an important habitat for native plants and animals.

The area provides significant outdoor recreational opportunities ranging from tramping to caving and also has great cultural and historical significance.

Reserves Act 1977

Appointment of The Queenstown-Lakes District Council to Control and Manage Reserves

Pursuant to the Reserves Act 1977, and to a delegation from the Minister of Conservation, the Regional Conservator, Department of Conservation, Otago, hereby appoints The Queenstown-Lakes District Council to control and manage the reserves described in the Schedules hereto, subject to the provisions of the said Act, as recreation reserves, such appointments to be subject to the conditions hereinafter provided:

(a) The appointment shall be for a term of 3 years from 1 April 1996.

(b) The Queenstown-Lakes District Council shall be required, pursuant to section 28 of the Reserves Act 1977, to submit a management plan for the reserves to the Minister of Conservation for approval.

Revocation of the Reservation Over a Reserve

Pursuant to the Reserves Act 1977, and to a delegation from the Minister of Conservation, the Regional Conservator, Hawke’s Bay Conservancy, hereby revokes the reservation as a local purpose (esplanade) reserve over the land described in the Schedule hereto.
