Traffic Regulations 1976

Left Hand Drive (Exemption From Equipment Requirements) Notice 1996

Pursuant to regulation 90 (1) of the Traffic Regulations 1976 (“the regulations”), and a delegation from the Director of Land Transport Safety dated 13 May 1996, I, Peter Nicholas Rendall, Senior Vehicle Compliance Officer, give the following notice:

Notice

(1) The notice may be cited as The Left Hand Drive (Exemption from Equipment Requirements) Notice 1996.

(2) The vehicles of the classes listed in the first column of the Schedule attached to this notice are declared exempt from the requirements of regulation 70 (1) of the regulations.

(3) The exempted vehicles shall be subject to the conditions in the second column of the attached Schedule.

Schedule

Class of Vehicle Conditions
Any vehicle other than a motor car or a goods vehicle with a manufacturer’s Gross Vehicle Mass of not more than 3500 kg, the manner of or type of operation of which requires it to have its steering column to the left of the centreline. Only if the Director of Land Transport Safety agrees that the operation of the vehicle needs it to have its steering column to the left of the centreline, and only whilst the vehicle is being used for that operation.
Any motor car or any goods vehicle with a manufacturer’s Gross Vehicle Mass of not more than 3500 kg and not less than 20 years old, which has not been modified. A letter from the Land Transport Safety Authority confirming that the vehicle qualifies for the exemption is retained in the vehicle at all times, and is produced on request to any Police Officer or authorised vehicle inspector.
Any vehicle imported before 1 February 1989 which was exempted by the regulation then in force. Exemption From Specified Requirements of the Traffic Regulations 1976

Pursuant to regulation 90 (2) of the Traffic Regulations 1976, I, Peter Nicholas Rendall, Senior Vehicle Compliance Officer, hereby exempt the motor vehicle specified in Schedule 1 of this notice from the requirements contained within regulation 78 (1) (a) and (b) of the Traffic Regulations 1976, subject to the conditions specified within Schedule 2 of this notice.

Schedule 2

Conditions

(i) Lap seatbelts manufactured to an approved standard are fitted to the driver’s seat and that of the right front passenger;

(ii) This exemption may be revoked at any time;

(iii) A copy of this notice must be carried in the vehicle at all times and be readily available for inspection.

Exemption From Specified Requirements of the Traffic Regulations 1976

Pursuant to regulation 90 (2) of the Traffic Regulations 1976, I, Peter Nicholas Rendall, Senior Vehicle Compliance Officer, hereby exempt the motor vehicle specified above from the provisions of the Traffic Regulations that require the vehicle to be right-hand drive.
