Commissions of Inquiry Amendment

Amends the Commissions of Inquiry Act 1908.

The most important amendment is to place a retired High Court Judge in the same position as serving High Court Judges when the retired Judge acts as a Commissioner.

Other amendments relate to the sanctions that can be applied to witnesses who fail to attend in compliance with a summons or refuse to testify; and to the powers of a commission to punish for contempt.

Applies to every commission of inquiry in existence at the commencement of the amending Act as well as to future commissions, but not to anything done or omitted to be done before the commencement of the amending Act.

(Hon D A M Graham/Referred to Justice and Law Reform Committee)

Private Members’ Bills

On alternate Wednesdays, the House gives precedence to private members’ business (known as a “private members’ day”). Three private members’ bills (in addition to any introduction interrupted the previous private members’ day) can be set down on the House’s Order Paper for introduction on each private members’ day. To gain one of these places, members lodge notices of their intention to introduce a bill and, in the absence of any agreement among members, a ballot is conducted to select the bills on the Tuesday prior to a private members’ day.

This week 24 notices for introduction were received on Tuesday, 18 July for the following bills:

  1. Jim Anderton—Health and Disability Services (Objectives Reform and Referendum Demand) Amendment Bill.
