Maori Land Reservations

Te Ra Potae and his wife Te Aokauirangi Potae (née Kahaki), the original owners of the land. The trustees to promote the following purposes:

(a) To provide a “Kainga noho” (accommodation) for any member of the above whanau (who are scattered all over the four corners of the Earth) when they return to their Turangawaewae and their hapu.

(b) To provide an on going educational centre for the benefit of research of their Whakapapa and learning of Te Reo Maori and other cultural activity, that they may be taking in now or in the future.

(c) To provide educational opportunities under current training programmes using present resource people who can offer their experience and skill to help the people, e.g., a native plant nursery training scheme is currently in the pipeline with the Tairawhiti Polytechnic and Conservation Department.

(d) To provide a meeting place of whanau without incurring exorbitant costs as currently established in some meeting places.

(e) To re-establish the “Mahinga Kai” concept, for their whanau. To enable them to utilise the vacant land available, to plan food. For present day members of above to learn about preparation of “Pareke reke” (kumara plant beds), the Maori calendar, etc.

(f) To establish trustees to be responsible for the administration of the reservation guided by present and previous legislation pertaining to Maori Reservations Regulations.

(g) As a future sight for the “Whare” Te Hau O Te Ana Nui A Tangaroa the Tipuna Whare now in the basement of the Canterbury Museum originally built as a residence for the Tipuna, Henare Potae.

Notice Setting Apart General Land as a Maori Reservation

Pursuant to section 338 of Te Ture Whenua Maori Act 1993, on the recommendation of the Maori Land Court, the general land described in the Schedule hereto, is hereby set apart as a Maori reservation for the use and enjoyment of the present and future direct descendants of Te Uranga O Te Ra Potae and his wife Te Aokauirangi Potae (née Kahaki), the original owners of the land.
