Traffic Regulations 1976

Temporary Exemption from the Seatbelt Requirements for Specified Class of Motor Vehicles

Pursuant to regulation 90, subclause (1) of the Traffic Regulations 1976, and subject to the conditions in the attached Schedule, the Secretary for Transport hereby exempts the class of motor vehicles specified below from the requirements of regulation 78A of the Traffic Regulations 1976. This notice shall come into effect on 1 October 1991 and expire on 1 April 1992.

Specified Class

The specified class of motor vehicles is: “All motor vehicles first registered in New Zealand from 1 November 1979 to 30 September 1990 inclusive, which are fitted with seatbelts which do not comply with any standard approved for the use of seatbelts in New Zealand.”

Schedule of Conditions

1. Seatbelts are fitted to all seating positions which are required to have a seatbelt, whether those seatbelts comply with any approved standard or not.

2. Any non-complying seatbelt that is fitted is in a good condition for its intended purpose, and any retractor mechanism that is fitted operates smoothly and consistently.

3. The Warrant of Fitness authority has completed a duplicate inspection sheet which identifies the seatbelt problems. One copy is to be held by the Warrant of Fitness authority with the
