Traffic Regulations 1976
Approval of Green Lights on Rescue Vehicles
Pursuant to regulation 38 of the Traffic Regulations 1976, approval is hereby granted, for the purpose of subclause (8) of Regulation 67 of the Traffic Regulations 1976, for the use of not more than two green flashing or revolving lights, on specified vehicles, as described in the Schedule of this notice, provided those vehicles comply with the conditions below. This approval expires on the 31st day of August 1992.
Schedule
Specified vehicles that are owned by The Life Flight Trust, Wellington and Auckland Regional Rescue Helicopter Trust, and are equipped and dedicated for emergency rescue operations as listed in this schedule:
The Life Flight Trust, Wellington
Vehicle make: Toyota, Registration number: PU5968
Auckland Regional Rescue Helicopter Trust
Vehicle make: Mazda 4x4, Registration number: NI8384
Vehicle make: Ford 4x4, Registration number: 4BYE4
Conditions:

The use of these lights DO NOT entitle the driver to disregard existing Traffic Regulations. The intention of this equipment is to inform motorists that this is an emergency vehicle, responding to an emergency.

Shall prominently display the words RESCUE, both sides and across the rear, in letters not less than 100mm high. With the word RESCUE alongside its mirror image, displayed to the front, in letters not less than 100mm high and the spread of each word not be less than 500mm.

This approval is for a trial period only, which will expire on the 31st August 1992. Any permanent approval may vary, including the requirement for standard vehicle colours, and drivers to attend an advanced driving course, approved for this purpose.

This approval is only valid while the above vehicles are owned by The Life Flight Trust, Wellington or the Auckland Regional Rescue Helicopter Trust, as listed in the above schedule, and are equipped and dedicated for emergency rescue work.

A copy of this approval must be carried in the vehicle at all times.

Approval of Alternating Flashing Headlamps
Pursuant to regulation 88 of the Traffic Regulations 1976, approval is hereby granted, for the purpose of subclause (8) of Regulation 67 of the said Regulations, to the fitting and use of an Alternating Flashing Headlamps system, in vehicles as described in the first and second schedules of this notice, provided those vehicles comply with the conditions below.
First Schedule
-
Marked and unmarked patrol vehicles owned and operated by the New Zealand Ministry of Transport.

Marked and unmarked patrol vehicles owned and operated by the New Zealand Police Department.
-
Ambulances that are approved by the New Zealand Ambulance Board.
-
Fire appliances that are operated by the New Zealand Fire Service.
Second Schedule
Specified vehicles that are owned by The Life Flight Trust, Wellington and Auckland Regional Rescue Helicopter Trust, and are equipped and dedicated for emergency rescue operations as listed in this schedule:

Auckland Regional Rescue Helicopter Trust
Vehicle make: Mazda 4x4, Registration number: NI8384
Vehicle make: Ford 4x4, Registration number: 4BYE4
Conditions
-
This system shall not be used during the hours of darkness, as defined in Regulation 2 of the Traffic Regulations 1976.

This system shall be connected into the dipped beam headlamp system as defined in subclause (3) Regulation 58 of the Traffic Regulations 1976.

This system shall incorporate an override system, that will immediately de-activate the headlamp flashing system as soon as the standard vehicle headlamp switch is activated.

When this system is in operation the headlamps shall alternately flash at a rate of not less than 60 or more than 120 flashes per minute.

This system is approved for emergency response vehicles only, and must be removed from the vehicle when the vehicle is withdrawn from this service.

Pursuant to section 70E (3) and (6) of the Transport Act 1962, a delegation from the Minister of Transport, and a sub-delegation from the Secretary of Transport, I, Carne Maurice Clissold, Controller Road and Traffic Standards, give the following notice:
Notice
The “prescribed standard” referred to in section 70F (3) (b) (c) and (d) of the Transport Act 1962, shall be the standard described in the First Schedule as modified by the Second Schedule.
