Traffic Regulations 1976
Braking Requirements for Forklift Trucks
Braking Performance Requirements for Forklift Trucks
Pursuant to regulation 90 of the Traffic Regulations 1976, and pursuant to the powers delegated to me by the Secretary for Transport, I, Hugh Cameron Matheson, Senior Automotive Engineer, hereby exempt a specified class of motor vehicle from the requirements of regulation 68 of the Traffic Regulations 1976, provided that those vehicles comply with the conditions described in the Schedule below.
Schedule
The specified class of motor vehicle is forklift truck. A forklift truck is defined as a machine designed primarily to lift and truck as defined with a vertical mast and/or variable reach boom to carry the forks or other material carrying attachment.
Conditions
Every forklift truck shall be equipped with two independent brakes, one being a service brake and the other being a parking brake. Each brake shall comply with the performance requirements as detailed below:
Requirements
Service Brakes:
The service brake shall be capable of bringing the vehicle to a standstill within a distance of:
- 10 m when fully laden, or
- 7 m when unladen
from a speed of 30 kilometres per hour.
Where the vehicle is incapable of achieving a speed of 30 kilometres per hour the service brake shall be capable of bringing the vehicle to a standstill within a distance of:
- 6 m when fully laden, or
- 4 m when unladen
from a speed of 20 kilometres per hour.
For vehicles with a maximum speed of less than 20 kilometres per hour the service brakes shall be capable of bringing the vehicle to a standstill within a distance of:
- 6 m when fully laden, or
- 4 m when unladen
from the vehicleβs maximum speed.
Parking Brake:
The parking brake shall be capable of holding the fully laden vehicle on a slope of 1 in 10 or the unladen vehicle on a slope of 1 in 6.

The course of Basic Motorcycle Instruction for the purposes of regulation 27 (1) (c) of the Transport (Drivers Licensing) Regulations 1987;
The course of Core Motorcycle Instruction for the purposes of regulation 30 (5) of the Transport (Drivers Licensing) Regulations 1987;
The course of Advanced Motorcycle Instruction for the purposes of regulations 32 of the Transport (Drivers Licensing) Regulations 1987;
