The Standards Act 1965—Draft New Zealand Standard Specifications Available for Comment
PURSUANT to subsection (3) of section 23 of the Standards Act 1965, notice is hereby given that the following draft New Zealand standard specifications are being circulated.
Number and Title of Specification
DZ 6216 Plugs and socket outlets. $11.00 (incl. GST).
This draft specification applies to plugs and socket-outlets intended for use at extra-low, low or medium voltages, for household or similar purposes. The specification does not apply to: appliance couplers for household and similar general purposes; plugs and socket-outlets for installation wiring; or plugs, socket-outlets and couplers for general industrial application.
The draft is one of a series of four Standards that will replace NZS 198:1967 and NZS 2147:1967. The other three drafts are:
DZ 6217 Cord extension sockets.
DZ 6218 Plug socket adaptors.
DZ 6219 Electrical portable outlet devices.
All four drafts are based on Australian Standards and most of the differences between the New Zealand and Australian Standards are minor. However, as flat-pin socket-outlets in New Zealand are rated at 10A, all references to the 15A and 20A plug and socket-outlet systems used in Australia have been omitted.
DZ 6216 includes ergonomic requirements for plugs to enable users to get a firm grip for easy withdrawal, but does not cater for the requirements of handicapped users of plugs, sockets outlets and related accessories.
DZ 6217 Cord extension sockets. $11.00 (incl. GST).
This draft applies to cord extension sockets intended for use at extra-low, low and medium voltages. It does not apply to cord extension sockets which are enclosed within an appliance in such a way that they are not exposed to personal contact, or which are intended for use solely where they will be so enclosed.
DZ 6218 Plug socket adaptors. $7.48 (incl. GST).
This draft applies to plug socket adaptors intended for use at low or extra-low voltage.
DZ 6219 Electrical portable outlet devices. $7.48 (incl. GST).
This draft applies to electrical portable outlet devices, primarily intended for household and similar use at low voltage and which are connected to the supply by either a flexible cord and a plug complying with 6.1 or an appliance inlet socket complying with 5.1 (b).
The draft does not apply to cord extension sets, portable current-operated (core balance) earth-leakage devices, plug socket adaptors, e.g., ‘double adaptors’, which are covered by DZ 6218, electric inspection handlamps, portable switching or control devices or separate devices for the storage of flexible cords or cord extension sets, e.g., a cable tidy.
All persons who may be affected by these publications and who desire to comment thereon, may obtain copies at the price shown, from the Standards Association of New Zealand, Wellington Trade Centre, 181–187 Victoria Street (or Private Bag), Wellington.
NOTE—Payment must accompany all requests for drafts.
The closing date for the receipt of comment is 15 January 1988.
Dated at Wellington this 12th day of October 1987.
