The Standards Act 1965—Draft New Zealand Standard Specification Available for Comment

PURSUANT to subsection (3) of section 23 of the Standards Act 1965, notice is hereby given that the following draft New Zealand standard specification is being circulated.

Number and Title of Specification

DZ 5842 Water safety signs. $11.00 (incl. GST).

This draft standard sets out requirements for the design and application of flags and safety signs incorporating graphic symbols, intended for use where water sports may be undertaken.

The aim is to standardise water safety symbols and their meanings. Many people living in New Zealand or visiting the country do not speak or read English. As a result, graphic symbols are becoming a means of universal communication. To provide an alternative language—one dependent upon symbols, not words—they must be standardised.

All persons who may be affected by this publication and who desire to comment thereon, may obtain copies at the price shown, from the Standards Association of New Zealand, Wellington Trade Centre, 181–187 Victoria Street (or Private Bag), Wellington.

Note: Payment must accompany all requests for drafts.

The closing date for receipt of comment is 13 November 1987.

Dated at Wellington this 21st day of August 1987.

DENYS R. M. PINFOLD,
Director, Standards Association of New Zealand.
