The Standards Act 1965—Draft New Zealand Standard Specifications Available for Comment

PURSUANT to subsection (3) of section 23 of the Standards Act 1965, notice is hereby given that the following draft New Zealand standard specifications are being circulated.

Number and Title of Specification

DZ 3602 Code of practice for specifying timber and wood based products for use in buildings. $15.00

This is a draft revision of NZS 3602:1975. It has been prepared taking into account the concurrent revision of NZS 3631:1978 Classification and grading of New Zealand timbers (National Timber Grading Rules).

The present Standard is approved as a means of compliance with the relevant requirements of NZS 1900 and states how timber and wood-based products are to be specified for particular use in building so that they can be expected to give acceptable performance during the life of the building. To that end this draft revision covers the materials themselves and also certain aspects of design and construction that are relevant to their performance in use.

DZ 3631 Classification and grading of New Zealand timbers (National Timber Grading Rules). $15.00

This is a draft revision of NZS 3631:1978 prepared concurrently with the revision of NZS 3602:1975 Code of practice for specifying timber and wood based products for use in buildings.

This is the sixth revision of the National Grading Rules for New Zealand Building Timbers issued in 1938 as NZS 169. The revision is based on a draft produced by a New Zealand Forest Service working group which drew on departmental expertise in many fields including wood technology, current trade practices, specialty timbers and timber engineering. Some of the principal reasons for the revision are:

to make provision for “new crop radiata pine”
to make provision for other timbers such as eucalypts, blackwood and black walnut
to bring NZS 3631 into line with current trade practices
to simplify the document and eliminate internal inconsistencies.

All persons who may be affected by these publications and who desire to comment thereon, may obtain copies at the prices shown, from the Standards Association of New Zealand, Wellington Trade Centre, 181–187 Victoria Street (formerly known as 15–23 Sturdee Street) (or Private Bag), Wellington.

NOTE—Payment must accompany all requests for drafts.

The closing date for the receipt of comment is 2 May 1986.

Dated at Wellington this 10th day of February 1986.

DENYS R. M. PINFOLD,
Director, Standards Association of New Zealand.
