Decision of the Films Censorship Board of Review

Chairman: J. M. Priestley,
Members: N. C. Anderson, Ms A. M. Dixon, Mrs J. B. Fish, Ms D. L. Henare, M. B. Menzies, C. B. Priestley.

Date of Review: 22 September 1983.

PURSUANT to section 82 of the Cinematograph Films Act 1976, 20th Century Fox Distribution applied for a review of the feature film The ABC of Love and Sex Australia Style. There were no submissions.

Having conducted a review of the film, pursuant to section 84 (5) of the Act, the Board decided, with one member dissenting, that the film should not be approved for public exhibition.

The film takes the form of an alphabetical lesson, masquerading as an educational film on the subject of love and sex. The film purports to equate love with sex, but, in fact, shows none of the true sensitivities of a meaningful relationship.

After a clinical start dealing with such matters as ‘anatomy’, ‘birth’, and ‘contraception’, the film then hits its true metier with such topics as ‘dreams’, eroticism’, and ‘fantasy’. Seen in its entirety the film was little more than an attempt to display lengthy and explicit scenes of seduction, masturbation, oral sex, and copulation under the guise of being a sensitive, educational film. This contrived mix was, in the opinion of the majority, fatal to the film’s chances under the statutory criterion. Most of the explicit scenes involved females rather than males.

In reaching its decision as to whether or not the film was likely to be injurious to the public good (section 26 (2)), the Board had regard to the matters specified in subsections a, b, c, and d.

The film seemed to the Board to be blatantly dishonest, misleading, and lacking integrity. One of the dominant effects was the portrayal of females as sex objects. The film went beyond normal stereotyping and denigrated both men and women as well as sex. It was also considered that the film would be offensive to a large number of people of any age.

The overall effect of the film was exploitative, tasteless, blatantly dishonest, and misleading in terms of its message, contradictory in what it was saying and showing, denigrative of women in particular and lacking artistic merit. Consequently, it led the majority to the conclusion that the film was likely to be injurious to the public good.

Although agreeing with the majority that this basically tasteless film presents a stereotypic male fantasy view of women, while masquerading as an educational film, Mr Menzies did not consider that it was sufficiently different from other films which are of similar sexist nature and shown widely to be in itself injurious to the public good, and to warrant rejection.

Scenes in the film, while explicitly sexual, did not link sex with violence. Information presented in the film was superficial or misleading to the extent that it would be manipulative of many young people if shown to younger age groups. An R18 classification was therefore supported by Mr Menzies, so as to enable adult members of the public to arrive at their own opinion of this film.

Dated at Wellington this 11th day of November 1983.
J. M. PRIESTLEY, Chairman.
