BLUE WATER RATIONALE
The Naval Defence of New Zealand 1914–1942 by I. C. McGibbon.
446 p. 1981. Illustrated.
$45 plus $3.60 p & p
For twenty years the strategic basis of New Zealand’s defence policy was “the main fleet to Singapore” strategy—the theory of a properly defended Singapore Naval Base to which adequate British Naval forces would be dispatched to defend the Empire East of Suez. In the event Singapore fell to the attacking Japanese forces on 15 February 1942. This book, then, is essentially a study of why New Zealand placed reliance on an unsatisfactory strategy, which was always admitted to be second best to that in which a battle fleet was permanently based in the Pacific.
