Decision No. 999
Reference No. Ind, 25/80, 26/80
Before the Indecent Publications Tribunal
IN the matter of the Indecent Publications Act 1963, and in the matter of an application by the New Zealand Police for a decision in respect of the following publication: Venus Shop Catalogue, published by the Venus Shop Ltd., Wellington.
Hearing: 1 May 1981.
Decision: 1 August 1981.
Appearances: Inspector D. L. Bates for the Legal Section, New Zealand Police.
Venus Shop Ltd. were represented by J. Billington.

Inspector D. L. Bates of the Legal Section, New Zealand Police, in his submission, remarks that the catalogue “is peculiar in that it is not a magazine in the common sense but an advertising booklet, cataloguing various erotic apparel and devices”.
The Police have commented that “some of the photographs depict scantily clad females in contrived and degrading poses and it is a reasonable interpretation that some of the models are simulating masturbation”, and list an assortment of unacceptable devices, i.e., whips, flags, artificial penes and vibrators.
The Police in their submission have made it clear that they are not seeking to prevent legitimate advertising by “sex
