Environmental Impact Report Notified—Proposed Rail Line Mission Bush to Maioro
In August 1980 NZ Steel Ltd. produced an environmental impact report on the proposed expansion of the iron and steel production facilities at their Glenbrook plant. In auditing that report the Commission for the Environment recommended that the company prepare a further environmental impact report on the transport of concentrate which:
(a) Fully evaluates the advantages and disadvantages of all practicable options for transporting the concentrate.
(b) Gives consideration to the tangible as well as intangible costs and benefits of each option.
(c) Assesses in detail the environmental implications of the proposed option.
NZ Steel Ltd. have prepared a report on “Transport of Ironsand Concentrate” which explores the advantages and disadvantages of transport options, as recommended in the audit. In this report the company concludes that the transport of ironsand concentrate by rail is the preferred option. The audit process will relate to the environmental implications of this choice and public submissions can take full account of the company’s report as well as the Environmental Impact Report prepared by NZ Railways on the proposed rail line.
The Commission invites submissions from the public. These should be addressed to the Commission for the Environment, P.O. Box 10241, Wellington, and should reach the Commission by 18 February 1982.
Copies of the Environmental Impact Report may be obtained from the Manager, NZ Steel Ltd., Glenbrook; from the District Engineer, NZ Railways Department, Private Bag, Auckland; and from Second Floor of Auckland Main Railway Station at a cost of $10. Free copies of the transport report are also available.
Copies of both reports may also be seen at Waiuku Public Library and Pukekohe Public Library as well as at the main libraries of Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin and the seven University Institutions.
Dated this 10th day of December 1981.
K. W. PIDDINGTON,
Commissioner for the Environment.
